Grilled-meat restaurant in Suyeong, Busan: Donbegi wine set

In short

Donbegi Gwang-an Branch is a dog-friendly grilled-meat restaurant in Minrak-dong, Suyeong, Busan. The two of us had the shoulder rack wine set and cold kimchi kalguksu while staff grilled and divided the meat for us. The tender meat and red wine paired well, though extra side dishes other than seasoned scallions cost extra.

What is the atmosphere like for dinner with wine?

I had noticed this place while passing by and looking at its menu, and a set menu called Couple Wine Table caught my eye, so we visited. I was curious about having meat and wine together.

There was also a notice saying the restaurant had been selected for excellence in the pork barbecue category for Suyeong-gu, Busan, by the Korea Consumer Industry Evaluation.

The display of wine, other alcoholic drinks, and wine glasses suited the atmosphere well. It felt different from the grilled-meat restaurants I usually picture.

When you enter, you can see a meat refrigerator opposite the waiting area. Seeing the meat before heading to our table caught my attention.

There were about four chairs in the waiting area. We arrived without a reservation at around 9:30 PM, and after the table ahead of us was cleared, we were seated right away.

What side dishes come with the meal, and are there extra charges?

Before the meat arrived, the side dishes and accompaniments were neatly set out. There were salt, wasabi, and a mushroom accompaniment, though I do not know the mushroom dish's exact name.

The seasoned scallions came in a generous bowl. Their sweet-spicy seasoning went well with the meat. Extra side dishes cost extra except for the seasoned scallions, so it is worth checking before ordering more. The restaurant also had a self-service bar.

How much was the wine set for two?

The menu included pork omakase, set menus, 480-hour aged meat, and special cuts. The two of us chose the shoulder rack wine set, which cost ₩47,000.

Staff grilled the meat themselves, which made it easy to eat. The mushrooms and green onions that came with it were cut large enough to have a satisfying bite, and they went well with the meat.

How did the meat and cold kimchi kalguksu taste?

We also added Geumsa-dong naeng kimchi kalguksu (cold kimchi knife-cut noodle soup). We both like noodles, and we enjoyed the chewy noodles and the cool yet pleasantly spicy broth.

Once the meat was fully cooked, the staff divided it in front of each of us so it was easy to eat. It was juicy and tender, so we ate it with different accompaniments.

For the first bite, I had it with wasabi. My first impression was how tender the meat was.

Next, I had it with myeongranjeot (salted pollock roe). The moderately salty roe and mild meat went well together.

We also drank red wine with the meat. Adding wine made it feel like having a meat dish at a restaurant.

The combination with the mushroom accompaniment was good as well. The flavor changed depending on whether we ate the meat on its own or added salt, wasabi, myeongranjeot, and other accompaniments, so it stayed varied through the end.

How satisfied were we with it as a date-night dinner?

The two of us ate until we were full, and the meat and accompaniments felt like a substantial spread. The staff's kind service also stayed with me. Even late in the evening, there were couples and foreign tourists there.

For me, the staff grilling the meat and the atmosphere that let us enjoy wine with it were especially nice. It suited a dinner date for two, and being able to bring a dog is another feature here. Still, it is best to check the cost of extra side dishes before ordering.
