Gangneung beachfront noodle house: 4 dishes for 3, Samgyori

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch is a dongchimi (radish water kimchi) makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant right in front of Namhangjin Beach in Gangneung. Three diners ordered plain dongchimi makguksu, hoe makguksu with pollock, buckwheat jeonbyeong (crepe roll) and buckwheat mandu (dumplings) at the table kiosk, mixed the dongchimi broth and sauces to taste, then took vending machine coffee to look at the sea. Thanks to the modern interior and the aroma of house-made buckwheat noodles, Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu is a noodle house worth stopping at on every trip to Gangneung.

Gangneung tofu restaurant, 00.89-second stopwatch win: Jeong Eunsuk

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu (정은숙초당순두부) is a Chodang soft tofu restaurant on Nanseolheon-ro near Gangmun Beach in Gangneung. On a local friend's recommendation, three people ordered the Chodang Premium Table for 3 and shared tofu samhap (fresh tofu with boiled pork), spicy grilled kodari (half-dried pollack) and a crab-filled hot pot so generous they left a little. Stopping the 00.89-second stopwatch at the Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu entrance didn't win the prize because it only counts in front of staff, a bittersweet ending to a satisfying meal.

Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap (영동밀면&돼지국밥) is the flagship of a pork soup and milmyeon (Busan cold wheat noodle) restaurant near Busan Station in Dong-gu, Busan. The writer ordered suyuk baekban (boiled pork set meal) for two plus dumplings; the boiled pork came on its own plate, and the broth was made spicy with dadaegi (spicy seasoning paste), salted shrimp and chive salad. For a filling meal before or after a train, the suyuk baekban and dumplings at Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap are a satisfying pick.

Drunken Kitchen (드렁큰키친) is a teppanyaki (iron-griddle) pub on the 2nd floor in Gwangalli, Suyeong, Busan, with a view of Gwangan Bridge. Garak Mall fish shop, bluefin belly platter upstairs: Yeongjae Susan

Yeongjae Susan (영재수산) is a fish shop and sashimi restaurant on the 1st floor of Garak Mall Panmae-dong at Garak Market in Songpa, Seoul. The writer planned to take it home but instead ate the small Premium Assorted Sashimi platter (80,000 won), with bluefin tuna belly and navel meat, big flounder and big red sea bream, at a chojang-jip (a restaurant that serves your market-bought sashimi with sauces and sides) on the 3rd floor of Garak Mall, then finished with seodeori maeuntang (spicy fish-bone stew). The Yeongjae Susan platter was almost too much for two people, and the bluefin tuna melted in the mouth.
