Katsu restaurant with a self-serve bar in Yuseong, Daejeon: Gatjidong

With the weather so nice, a lot of you must be heading out for a day trip near Daejeon, right?

Especially when you search for Daejeon National Cemetery restaurants or Daejeon World Cup Stadium restaurants, you often end up unsure where to actually go.

"Isn't there somewhere that's genuinely good and not just an ad?" — I think that all the time too. I visited a place that made me go "wow, this is the real deal!" and I want to share an honest review of it: Gatjidong Noeun Branch.

Where is Gatjidong Noeun Branch, and what are its hours?

Gatjidong Noeun Branch is a pork cutlet and rice bowl restaurant at 885-9 Jijok-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. It's open 11:00-21:00, every day, with no break time.

This Daejeon National Cemetery restaurant, Gatjidong Noeun Jijok Branch, is also easy to get to. It's about a 10-minute walk from Noeun Station, and if you're taking the bus, get off at 'Noeun-dong Catholic Church' and it's right nearby.

Finding the yellow sign on a first visit

Gatjidong Noeun Jijok Branch already has a great reputation as a Yuseong restaurant. The bright yellow sign, visible from far away, really stood out. The phrase on it, roughly "a freshly made delicious meal," got my appetite going.

Outside the restaurant, the best menu items are introduced on a standing signboard, so even before going in I was already happily agonizing over what to order.

Menu and prices at Gatjidong Noeun Branch

Gatjidong Noeun Jijok Branch has such a wide range of menu items — from pork cutlet to salmon, udon, rice bowls, and curry — that anyone can find something to their taste, no matter who they come with.

We ordered through the kiosk set up at each table, and here's what we got:

Inside Gatjidong: seating and what's on the self-serve bar

The interior of Gatjidong Noeun Branch has a clean, modern wood-tone look and a comfortable atmosphere, and I liked that the self-serve bar had extra rice, soup, and a soft stew so we could eat as much as we wanted without any hassle.

Signature half-and-half pork cutlet with stretchy cheese, 12,800 won

The signature half-and-half pork cutlet is ₩12,800. Eating it, the crispy texture was a given, but the thickness of the meat and the juiciness were really something else. I hadn't realized it at first, but apparently Gatjidong has its own special aging process and cooking method.

The sauce especially took the pork cutlet's flavor up another level. Not to mention the visual of the cheese stretching out endlessly. Visiting in person, I immediately understood why everyone calls this place a great pork cutlet spot.

Fresh salmon salad, 13,800 won

The fresh salmon salad is ₩13,800, and true to its name, the salmon was piled on generously. Can you tell how fresh it looks? A glossy piece of salmon eaten with wasabi practically melted in my mouth.

Katsu curry rice bowl, 10,800 won

Last up, the katsu curry rice bowl is ₩10,800, and the harmony of the smooth, rich curry sauce with the crispy pork cutlet was excellent. Piling curry and cutlet on top of the rice for one big bite was a flavor with nothing to envy.
