Whenever I visit the apartments around Amsa Station, I always stop by Amsa Market for snacks. There are snack shops selling eomuk (fish cake) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), plus a famous jokbal (braised pig’s trotters) place, but this time Gimssi Chicken, where people were lining up and waiting, caught my eye. How good must the chicken be for people to line up for it? We got in line and placed our order too!!

This was the only spot in Amsa Market where people were gathered. Gimssi Chicken is known for its dakgangjeong (bite-size sweet-and-savory fried chicken).

It is said to be one of Seoul’s top three dakgangjeong shops, proven over 15 years. They had been making dakgangjeong at Myeonmok Market for 15 years, and now they have opened several branches around Seoul. I was curious about the taste.

The freshly made dakgangjeong was selling out right away. It reminded me of the famous dakgangjeong at Sokcho Market. There is a great dakgangjeong place in Seoul too~~ Why didn’t I know about it until now? Gimssi Chicken’s dakgangjeong is a little smaller than the kind at Sokcho Market, so it is easier to eat.

Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch (김씨치킨 암사시장점) is inside Amsa Market. In this small space, five staff members were continuously frying chicken and making dakgangjeong. The work was clearly divided up and moved along efficiently.

After ordering, wait in the back and they will call your number.

The chicken was fried twice, then coated with sauce. They also added a few pieces of fried tteok (rice cake).

The sauce comes in mild, regular, and spicy. There were two sauce containers, mild and spicy, and it seemed that the regular version uses both sauces together.

They weighed the portions on a scale before serving them.

As I watched people ordering, I saw them take away half boneless fried chicken and half dakgangjeong too.

They also had drumsticks, wings, and drumettes. Half-and-half takeaway packs.

Freshly fried gizzards and special-size dakgangjeong

We ordered fried chicken gizzards for ₩8,000 and special-size dakgangjeong for ₩13,000. The gizzards were fried to order, so we needed to wait about five minutes. They packed everything in paper boxes and put them into a plastic bag, but I could not resist opening it right away and started eating while looking around the market street.

These chicken gizzards had just come out of the fryer, so they were wonderfully crisp and chewy!! Now I understand why people line up for them. The batter tasted so good too!

They were so good that I finished all the gizzards on the street. The dakgangjeong made it safely home.

The sauce was evenly distributed through the dakgangjeong. I ate it cold, but it was still absolutely delicious!!

One of Seoul’s top three dakgangjeong shops—I understood why once I tasted it. I cannot get to Amsa Market often, but the original branch is nearby at Myeonmok Market, so I thought I should go there often from now on.

The ₩13,000 special-size dakgangjeong was very generous. One of Seoul’s top three dakgangjeong shops: kind on the wallet and great in flavor.

From now on, Gimssi Chicken is my dakgangjeong place. Ah~ And when buying dakgangjeong, get the chicken gizzards too!!!
