In short

Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam is a Korean restaurant near Myeongil Station in Gangdong, Seoul, serving jokbal roasted in a 500°C-plus oven. I paired the ₩39,000 small collagen bomb oven-roasted jokbal with makguksu and sundubu jjigae, plus a Gorgonzola pizza from the review event. Verdict: the crisp outside and moist interior made for a very satisfying meal.

Food from a visit to Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam near Myeongil Station

Oven-roasted jokbal near Myeongil Station

I was craving jokbal recently, so I visited Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam Myeongil Branch (이선화덕족발보쌈 명일점) on Myeongridan-gil in Gangdong. I found it while looking for a good jokbal spot in Gangdong, and once I heard that the jokbal is roasted once more in an oven, I went without hesitation.

The exterior of Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam Myeongil Branch, tucked into an alley off Myeongridan-gil, was fairly neat.

There were outdoor tables as well, so you can enjoy outdoor dining in weather like this.

The tidy atmosphere continued inside. There were around 10 tables, and we sat by the window.

One thing that caught my eye inside was the huge screen. Music videos were playing when we visited, but it looked perfect for watching sports too! Since it can accommodate groups of up to 50 people, it seemed like a good option for family gatherings or work dinners as well.

More than anything, the giant oven set off to one side of the restaurant was what really caught my attention!

After Korean pork jokbal and bossam are boiled until delicious like this,

they are roasted thoroughly in an oven at over 500°C. Watching them turn beautifully golden had me excited already, haha.

Ordering oven-roasted jokbal and side dishes

At Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam Myeongil Branch, we ordered the small Collagen Bomb Oven-Roasted Jokbal (₩39,000), makguksu (buckwheat noodles, ₩10,000), and sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew, ₩6,000)!

With the main dish, the basic spread arrived with ssam vegetables, seasoned chives, dried shredded radish, kimchi, salted shrimp, and ssamjang.

Everything was generally neat and pleasantly tangy, and I liked being able to refill it easily at the self-service bar.

Not long after ordering, the small Collagen Bomb Oven-Roasted Jokbal (₩39,000) arrived!

Perhaps because it was roasted thoroughly in an oven at over 500°C, it had a fresh appeal quite different from ordinary jokbal! The outside was crisp with a subtle smoky aroma, while the inside was moist, with a rich savory flavor at the same time.

The oven-roasted jokbal was delicious even on its own, but eating it with the dried shredded radish that came with it doubled the freshness—absolutely heavenly.

The makguksu and sundubu jjigae combination

Makguksu (₩10,000)

I absolutely cannot leave out the makguksu, which pairs fantastically with oven-roasted jokbal. The chewy, bouncy noodles were tossed in a spicy-sweet sauce, and the look alone whetted my appetite! Fresh, crunchy vegetables added a satisfying bite too. Have it with the jokbal and you will naturally want soju, haha.

Sundubu Jjigae (₩6,000)

The sundubu jjigae we ordered alongside added even more flavor.

Pillowy soft tofu and tender egg simmered in the hot, peppery broth, balancing the rich oven-roasted jokbal.

Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam Myeongil Branch was also running an event where, for writing a Naver review, you could choose one of three items: Gorgonzola pizza, rice balls, or a drink. So we chose the Gorgonzola pizza!

It had plenty of cheese on a very thin, crispy crust, making it feel especially generous.

Dipping it in the honey served alongside made it even more delicious.

And you just cannot resist jokbal skin, haha. Its crisp yet moist texture made it impossible to put my chopsticks down.

With all these different dishes filling out the table, it was an excellent meal and drinking accompaniment. If you want jokbal or bossam in Gangdong and are looking for a more special Korean restaurant, I would recommend Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam Myeongil Branch. The thoroughly oven-roasted jokbal was crisp and moist, and the well-rounded side-dish selection made it a satisfying meal!
