First impressions of Dongbaek, a course-meal favorite
Dongbaek is a traditional Chinese restaurant located at Handeok intersection in Gimhae's Hwalcheongogae area, and the entrance's classic hanok feel had me excited from the moment I arrived 🏛️ There's a basement parking lot down behind the building, which made driving there really convenient 🚗

Step inside and the upscale interior catches your eye right away,

The private room setup felt like the perfect spot for a family meal out or a private gathering 🌿 (You can reserve via Naver up to a day before visiting.)

Each table has a tablet installed, so we could order comfortably without flagging down staff 📱

There's a clean self-serve bar off to one side, so we could grab any utensils or side dishes we needed without hesitation ✨
What does the Lunch Special Course A actually look like?

We ordered the Lunch Special Course A (₩20,000, single serving), known for being a great-value course meal!
It's a hearty lineup: Dongbaek cold salad, abalone porridge, yusanseul, tangsuyuk, yurinki, a meal course, and dessert 😋

First up came warm, soft abalone porridge alongside the refreshing Dongbaek cold salad 🥣
It's exactly the kind of combo that wakes up your appetite before the main dishes — the first bite put me in a great mood 💛
The savory abalone porridge and the crunchy texture of the cold salad opened the course on a really nice note!😋

Next came the yusanseul, where seafood, mushrooms, and meat came together fresh with deep umami flavor!😋
The shiitake mushrooms and plump shrimp still had a lively texture, so it was clean and mild rather than heavy.
How does crispy tangsuyuk pair with yurinki?
Then came the main dish you can't skip in Chinese food — tangsuyuk! Here it comes!

The batter was thin and crispy while the meat inside was thick — the texture with each bite was really satisfying 🥩

With the sweet-and-sour sauce and crunchy shredded onion on top, it was clean and not greasy at all!

Next up, the yurinki — crispy fried chicken paired with a tangy sauce and salad — had that addictive flavor 🍋

The dishes kept coming without any lull, timed well enough that it was really comfortable to eat while chatting!
Finishing with spicy, smoky jjamppong
For the meal course to close out the set, I went with the spicy jjamppong (noodle soup)

It was loaded with mussels and vegetables, which brought the meal to a perfect finish!
If you're looking into course meals in Gimhae or need a Chinese restaurant good for hosting others, I'd recommend Dongbaek — both the space and the food are excellent 💛 A neat course meal enjoyed in a private space makes for a satisfying meal!
