Daegu pork BBQ with deolmi-sal & off-menu mixed gukbap: Don Gukbap
In short
Don Gukbap (돈국밥) is a gukbap (pork rice soup) and grilled pork restaurant in a Goseong-dong alley near Buk-gu Office Station in Daegu. After work on a Friday, the writer had 4 servings of deolmi-sal (a pork neck cut the owner recommends) and an off-menu mixed gukbap, along with self-serve sundae innards and tteokbokki and the fried rice that comes free with grilled meat orders. Don Gukbap filled everyone up for under 50,000 won in total, which makes a return visit a sure thing.

Last Friday after work I felt like having a little meat and a beer. After some serious searching, I found Don Gukbap (돈국밥), a favorite of office workers near Buk-gu Office Station. It's pretty famous with locals too, as a gukbap (rice soup) and grilled meat place! Here's my review of stuffing myself with their truly simmered gukbap and their signature deolmi-sal (pork neck)!
Don Gukbap location, opening hours and parking
Don Gukbap is at 8 Oksan-ro 7-gil, Buk-gu, Daegu, South Korea, about a 5-10 minute walk from Buk-gu Office Station. It's open Mon-Sat 10:30-22:00, and takeout, delivery and reservations are all available. For parking, just use the street parking in the nearby alleys.
I went at 6 p.m. on a Friday, peak time, and it was already packed. If I'd been a little later, I would have had to wait!
Is Don Gukbap good for an after-work group dinner?

As a proper neighborhood favorite, Don Gukbap also had people who'd come to drink with friends. There's a group table for 8 and you can reserve, so it'd be a good place for a get-together or company dinner near Buk-gu Office Station.

Here's why Don Gukbap is a real gukbap place! They say the broth is 100% real bone broth, not extract plus powder. I had a brief doubt about whether it could really be 100%, but one taste of the gukbap and you know it's the real thing!!
Don Gukbap menu: why to order grilled pork at dinner

As the name suggests, gukbap is the main item, but if you come in the evening I really recommend the grilled meats. Pork cheek, deolmi-sal and jjondeun-sal are ₩4,000-5,000 per 100g!!! Every table there was eating grilled meat when I went... haha
Side dishes and self-serve sundae innards and tteokbokki

After we ordered, they set out the side dishes, and the kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), gukbap's essential partner, was especially good!! It was so good I even got a refill.

Since we ordered grilled meat, we also got lettuce and jaeraegi (seasoned wrap-style pickled side), and the sweet-and-sour jaeraegi was perfect for whetting the appetite.

WOW~~~~ Don Gukbap is also famous as a gukbap place with unlimited sundae (Korean blood sausage) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). I was a little sad to see a notice that sundae can't be offered for now, but you can help yourself to the sundae innards!!

I like the innards more than the sundae anyway, so that's even better~~~~~~ Tteokbokki with innards, isn't that a total snack-bar feast?!

Dipping the innards in the tteokbokki is great, but wrapping them up together with the jaeraegi is out of this world~~~
How was Don Gukbap's deolmi-sal for four?
- Deolmi-sal (pork neck), 4 servings
- Mixed gukbap

You can't skip the grilled meat at Don Gukbap, so while I was wondering which cut to get, I ordered the owner's recommended pick, deolmi-sal.

We put the deolmi-sal and vegetables together on the grill they brought. Even before cooking, it looked like it'd be wonderfully chewy. The meat was turning golden brown!! It's thin, so it cooks fast, and this hungry hyena was so happy!!
Even to the eye, the fat and meat are nicely balanced, so one bite gives you decent juiciness and a lovely chewy texture. It was my first time trying deolmi-sal, and I wondered why I hadn't had it sooner...

It was so good plain that I just kept eating it, then remembered they'd given us a dipping sauce and hurriedly tried it. The sauce seemed like meljeot (salted anchovy sauce), and dipping in it really brought out the savory depth, a totally different feel.

The chewiness and meaty aroma are really different from pork shoulder or pork belly. Even looking at the photos now I want it again, and I'm debating going tonight... The deolmi-sal is seriously, truly, really delicious, so please try it!

Can you order the off-menu mixed gukbap?
The mixed gukbap (seokkeo gukbap) wasn't on the menu, but when I asked, they said it was possible. "Mixed" meant pork meat plus innards.

It was packed with ingredients and the meat was especially chewy, so good. They say they use 100% bone broth and I doubted it, but one sip and it was really rich and deep 👍

Free fried rice with grilled pork orders
While we were happily eating, the owner quietly set something down. It was fried rice!!!!! It seems to be a free service when you order grilled meat ✨️

Under the rice is a bed of seaweed flakes and kimchi. Rice fried in meat fat??? It can't be anything but delicious 👍👍

Putting grilled meat on a bite of the finished fried rice made me burst into applause 👏👏 Gukbap, deolmi-sal and fried rice for under ₩50,000, and we ate until we were stuffed. Don Gukbap, a great spot near Buk-gu Office Station. Definitely coming back ⭕️⭕️⭕️⭕️⭕️
