Ganghwa duck restaurant for brunch after Jeondeungsa Temple: Deok Ori

In short

Deok Ori Jumulleok Ganghwa Main Branch is a duck jumulleok (spicy stir-fried duck) restaurant near Jeondeungsa Temple in Ganghwa, Incheon. After walking around the temple, the writer had a late-morning brunch of duck jumulleok for two, 600g for 40,000 won, plus fried rice for 3,000 won; the owner sears the duck over an open flame first and it is then finished at the table, so the smoky char comes through clearly. With the owner's homemade side dishes, Deok Ori Jumulleok made a filling meal for two.

I went out for a day trip to Ganghwa and dropped by Jeondeungsa Temple for the first time in a while. By the time I finished looking around the temple, it was already brunch time. Looking for somewhere to eat nearby, I decided to have duck jumulleok and visited Deok Ori Jumulleok Ganghwa Main Branch.

Inside Deok Ori Jumulleok: the dining room and homemade side dishes

I found a seat inside and ordered. Since I came during brunch hours, I could take my time eating, and after ordering, the duck jumulleok arrived along with a spread of side dishes.

A spread of side dishes made by the owner

The side dishes caught my eye, and the owner told me she makes every single one herself. Tasting them, they had a familiar flavor more like home-cooked side dishes than store-bought ones.

It wasn't just that there were a lot of side dishes — each one tasted different, so they went well alongside the duck jumulleok.

We went as a pair, so we ordered duck jumulleok for two first, then added fried rice after finishing the meat.

How the open-flame seared duck jumulleok arrives at the table

The cooking method was a bit different here. Once you order, the owner grills the duck jumulleok over an open flame first.

She then brings the partially cooked meat to your table, and you stir-fry it further right there on the tabletop.

Instead of grilling raw meat from scratch at the table, it's flame-grilled first and then brought over, so the meat carries a real smoky char.

At the table, you keep stir-frying it with the sauce, so you can keep eating it hot the whole time.

Taking a bite, I could taste both the seasoning and the smoky char from the open-flame grilling together. Rather than a strong gamey duck flavor, it was more that the sauce and smoke blended into a flavor that made me think of rice.

Wrapping the duck and side dishes together in a lettuce wrap worked well too, and eating the meat on its own made the smoky flavor stand out even more clearly.

Finishing the meal with fried rice

After eating a fair amount of the duck jumulleok, we added the fried rice. Frying rice in the leftover sauce made for a good way to wrap up the meal after the meat.

With the two of us finishing the duck jumulleok first and then the fried rice too, we ended up plenty full for a late brunch.

Is Deok Ori Jumulleok worth a stop near Jeondeungsa Temple?

The grill near the end of the meal

What stuck with me most from this visit was the flame-grilling-first cooking method and the homemade side dishes. Since the owner grills it over an open flame first and then brings it to the table, it felt different from grilling raw meat from scratch right at the table, and being able to stir-fry it and eat it immediately at your seat was convenient. The side dishes had that familiar home-cooked flavor, so they went well between bites of the duck jumulleok. With the two of us eating both the meat and the fried rice, it was more than enough for one meal — a perfect meal, really.

Wrapping up the duck jumulleok meal in Ganghwa

Deok Ori Jumulleok Ganghwa Main Branch, visited for a late brunch after touring Jeondeungsa Temple after a long while. Since the duck jumulleok is flame-grilled first and then finished off with stir-frying at the table, it was a bit different from duck jumulleok grilled from scratch right at the table. The smoky char from the open-flame grilling paired well with the sauce, and having homemade side dishes alongside it was a nice touch. If you're stopping by Jeondeungsa Temple and looking for somewhere to eat, or searching for good restaurants near Jeondeungsa Temple in Ganghwa, this duck jumulleok is worth considering. It worked well as a late brunch for me after visiting the temple, and with the fried rice on top of the duck jumulleok, it made for a hearty, satisfying meal.
