Today, a book review for the first time in ages! I read Deokbang Yeonguso’s Protect Your Jeonse and Monthly Rent Deposits. With jeonse deposits rising recently, news about jeonse fraud is all too common, and I think the worries of jeonse tenants (including me) are growing by the day.

Before moving into my current home, I was told that my jeonse deposit could not be returned until a new tenant was found, haha. I was seriously scrambling to find one myself. I went to Suwon and came back because the dates did not work out... Honestly, even thinking about that time gives me a headache. Deokbang Yeonguso is a YouTuber who explains real-estate basics in an easy-to-understand way, sharing tips for protecting deposits from scams involving apartments, villas, one-room homes, and officetels. With victims of jeonse scams soaring these days, this is someone we absolutely need, haha.

“Move Quickly,” the section of the table of contents I read closely

The part I personally read most closely was Chapter 2, “Move Quickly.” I read this chapter diligently, thinking that I could have acted more quickly if I had known this information.

(Even thinking back on it, it was so absurd, haha.) It lays out very clearly what I should do when I am told to wait until a new tenant is found.

One new thing I learned was that I already knew about giving notice that I would not renew, but even if you send proof by text message or KakaoTalk, it is safer to receive a text or KakaoTalk reply agreeing to the non-renewal. It also details what to do if there is no reply afterward, but please refer to the book for the specifics!

I used to think jeonse fraud had nothing to do with me, but then I nearly had trouble receiving my money on time.... Since then, I have once again realized just how important prevention really is.
