In short

Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo is a basement bar in Gwancheol-dong, Jongno, Seoul, styled after a European monastery and a short walk from Jonggak Station. On this visit the order was two drinks and a gorgonzola pizza, so the nutty, savory cheese came with something to sip alongside it. I was looking for a bar with good atmosphere near Jonggak Station and ended up at Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo (수도원의 비밀 저장고, literally "the monastery's secret cellar"). The name alone made me curious what kind of space it would be, and it turned out to have an emotional interior inspired by European monasteries, with a distinctly different atmosphere.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars around Jonggak Station, but this place's concept stood out from the usual spots. I wanted to introduce it as a good option for anyone wanting to enjoy good food and drinks together for a special occasion.

Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo is located near Jonggak Station, with the shop set up underground. Walking down the stairs reveals a space completely different from the everyday street atmosphere above.

What is the basement space like?

Being an underground shop, it really did feel like stepping into a secret cellar, just as the name suggests. The unique concept inspired by European monasteries came through clearly in the space, giving off a different feeling from a typical bar.

It was impressive to enjoy drinks and food in a space where music and interior come together so well. It seemed like a good spot to visit with friends or acquaintances for relaxed conversation, and also a nice date spot for anyone looking for an atmospheric place near Jonggak Station.

It's the kind of place that comes to mind when you want to spend time somewhere a little more special than your usual go-to restaurant.

The menu at Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo and what we ordered

Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo is a drinks-focused bar where you can enjoy a wide range of alcohol including soju, draft beer, bottled beer, and wine. It's a place built around pairing drinks with food, so it's worth keeping that in mind before visiting.

This time we ordered two types of drinks and a gorgonzola pizza. Rather than just drinking, I wanted a tasty side dish to go with it, so I chose the pizza, expecting the cheesy pizza to pair well with the drinks.

It was nice that the drink menu was so varied, letting you pick something that suits your taste. If you're visiting with a group, it's a good setup for everyone to order their own drink and share food together.

How was the gorgonzola pizza?

The gorgonzola pizza we ordered at Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo was a dish where you could really enjoy the cheese's distinctive savory flavor. The pizza was easy to share slice by slice, making it a good side dish for drinks.

The gorgonzola's characteristic cheese aroma paired well with the light, plain pizza dough, making it easy to enjoy without feeling heavy. The subtle cheese flavor also worked nicely alongside the drinks.

Taking a sip of a drink and then a bite of pizza, the cheese's savoriness and the drink's flavor blended together naturally. It struck me as a great menu item to order when visiting with a group.

It was nice to slowly enjoy conversation with a pizza in the middle of the table, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a relaxed time with a simple side dish.
