Jongno 3-ga bakery, squid ink and milk cream bread to go: Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery near Jongno 3-ga Station and Ikseon-dong in Jongno, Seoul. Instead of the usual garlic bread, this visit meant squid ink condensed milk bread, milk cream bread and coffee bread carried home to eat with coffee — every dough was chewy, and the milk cream bread now ranks alongside the garlic bread. For a first visit to Munhwa Bakery, the signature coffee bread and garlic bread are the safest picks.

Three breads picked instead of Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread
But~ every time I come here I eat garlic bread, so today was a new challenge!
- Squid ink custard bread
- Milk cream bread
- Coffee bread
I packed these up to take home.

Squid ink condensed milk bread, ₩4,500
Squid ink custard bread. First off, every bread at Munhwa Bakery is chewy — no dry bread here. There's a reason it's called a 'life bakery,' turns out.

Since it's a custard bread, it's sweet, but not crazy-sweet like chocolate — a moderate sweetness that went down so easily with coffee I finished it right on the spot ,, 🫢

Milk cream bread, ₩3,500
Milk cream bread. Honestly, milk cream bread is sold everywhere, and I already like the flavor and had a pretty good idea what to expect, so I ate it with zero expectations — but it turned out this place is now number one for milk cream bread too, right after garlic bread!

Only the name 'milk cream' is common — the taste is different from other bakeries ❕ The crust is chewy and soft like the custard bread, and the milk cream tastes like nothing I've had before… (if I had to compare it to something, maybe hip bread…?!) It's fluffy, lightly sweet, and not greasy at all.

Coffee bread, ₩5,800 — slicing on request
Coffee bread. I asked them to cut it, and they sliced it into nice bite-size pieces. This is the kind of bread that takes you to heaven with an americano or latte. Eating it, I really felt — this place is genuinely great at bread. It's so soft and moist it almost feels like cake. My parents, who don't even like bread, said they'd just try a bite and ended up finishing the whole thing 😂 They even made me promise to buy it again next time.

First visit to Munhwa Bakery? Coffee bread and garlic bread
If it's your first visit and you're not sure what to get, I recommend the signature coffee bread and garlic bread. They have wide appeal, so I think anyone would find them delicious! And I'm pretty sure… you'll be back 🤣

Munhwa Bakery blends so well with the Ikseon-dong / Jongno atmosphere 🍞 What I kept feeling while eating here is that this is a place that focuses on making the bread itself well, rather than piling on trendy ingredients for flavor ~~~

It's not flashy, just solidly good bread — which I think is exactly why it's been loved for so long. Since it's takeout only, you can't eat there, but that actually makes it perfect to enjoy leisurely at home with coffee ~ ☕️

If you're looking for good bread near Jongno 3-ga Station, I'd recommend this as a great takeout stop after a walk through Ikseon-dong!
Tips for visiting Munhwa Bakery in Jongno
Since the popular items get snapped up quickly, if there's a specific bread you want, I'd recommend not visiting too late in the day. It's a must-visit bakery if you're in Ikseon-dong — definitely worth stopping by at least once 💛
