Today I visited Cheonandang Dandae Branch, a famous walnut cake (hodu-gwaja) shop in Cheonan! When you think of Cheonan, walnut cakes come to mind right away, right? I bet you all feel the same!
There are so many walnut cake shops that it's hard to know where to go, so I'm starting this review of Cheonandang Dandae Branch to help you out!
You can also order conveniently online!
Cheonandang Dandae Branch location and parking
Cheonandang Dandae Branch is at 177 Manghyang-ro, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, Chungnam, right in front of Dankook University. There's plenty of parking too, so no worrying about finding a spot, which was nice.
01. Exterior of Cheonandang Dandae Branch

It's right in front of Dankook University, so it's super easy to get to. Students can stop by every day after class, so I imagine it's a bit of a nostalgic snack for them.
The signs of age on the exterior made me think, even before tasting, that this really is a famous walnut cake place in Cheonan. It was my first time in Cheonan, and I thought, wow, walnut cakes really are famous here!
Walnut cakes baked nonstop in the shop, and the atmosphere inside
02. Inside Cheonandang Dandae Branch

The inside is a single floor and quite spacious. They keep baking in the shop so they don't run out of walnut cakes, so I think visiting late would be fine too.
Before visiting Cheonan I researched walnut cake spots a lot, but in the end the original shop with the history and tradition is the best.

Besides walnut cakes, they also sold nurungji (scorched rice) chips, which looked like a good little snack.
There was also a machine for baking the walnut cakes, and the size was huge! It made me think there's a reason Cheonan walnut cakes are famous for being tasty. The owners were really kind too, which made the visit even more pleasant.

Gift packaging and nationwide delivery
The basic package at Cheonandang Dandae Branch is neat and perfect for gifting, so I felt you don't really need to add a gift box. Still, the gift box packaging is so meaningful, so just note that it can be added for ₩1,000.

Cheonandang also runs nationwide delivery! You can enjoy this taste at home too, which is even better to know.
Without going all the way to Cheonan, one simple order lets you enjoy the same taste at home! That's really special. The world has gotten so convenient these days.

- ₩10,000 (30 pieces)
- ₩15,000 (45 pieces)
- ₩20,000 (60 pieces)
That's the lineup. They also have red bean butter and Lotus flavors, but these are often sold out if you visit late, so it's best to check!
Bought 2 boxes of ₩10,000 (30 pieces)!

I bought two boxes of 30 pieces for ₩10,000 each.

Cheonan's signature walnut cakes, great for gifts, events, office snacks and wedding return gifts, and made without preservatives, coloring or flavoring so you can enjoy them more healthily: that's Cheonandang Dandae Branch!

Maybe because I bought them after watching them bake each walnut cake by hand with such care, I could really feel that care in them.

The filling was thicker and bigger than I expected, so a few of them would work as a meal replacement!
How it tastes: fluffy like sponge cake

Trying it myself, the soft, fluffy batter is definitely different from other places.
The fluffiness and thickness, more like castella (sponge cake) than a walnut cake, set these apart. Cheonan walnut cakes felt completely different from any walnut cakes I've had before!
