Main image from the visit to Haekbap Dongguk

Today I visited Haekbap Dongguk (핵밥 동국대점), near Chungmuro Station, a place popular with Dongguk University students and office workers for neat Japanese home-style rice bowls. When I want a protein boost, a meat rice bowl and crispy sides are the first things I think of, and I got both in a really satisfying meal. I'll review everything from the atmosphere to the taste!

Entrance and sign of Haekbap Dongguk at the bottom of the stairs

Haekbap Dongguk sits in a cozy space just down a short flight of stairs. The sign says "home-style rice bowls & ramen specialty shop" in big letters, so it wasn't hard to find.

Haekbap Dongguk interior and seating: good for eating alone?

The restaurant is much bigger and more pleasant than it looks from outside, with plenty of seats, so it works for solo meals and groups alike. Clean white tables and warm wooden chairs give it a cozy yet modern Japanese restaurant feel. The softly lit arched lights on the wall and the framed menus add a touch of class.

The tables are spaced out comfortably and there are lots of seats, so eating alone feels no pressure at all, and it's a great layout for coming with friends or coworkers too. Best of all, the place is kept very clean, which made me happy even before the food arrived.

Best time for a quiet visit: right after the 4:30 PM break

I went at 4:30 PM, right after break time ended, so it was quiet, but I hear it gets crowded at lunch and dinner.

How to order at Haekbap Dongguk: table tablets and how to eat the rice bowl

Each table has its own tablet (T-order), so you can sit down and check the menu and order at your own pace. It was handy to browse the menu photos without needing to talk to staff.

The top of the screen shows Wi-Fi info, a Naver receipt review event, and a friendly guide on "how to enjoy your rice bowl." Tips like "Don't mix it; scoop it with a spoon" and "Put meat and toppings on the rice and add wasabi for even better flavor" kept me reading while I waited for the food.

What comes with Haekbap's cube steak rice bowl set?

When you order Haekbap Dongguk's cube steak rice bowl as a set rather than a single item, it comes with mini udon and a fried chicken (karaage) salad, filling the whole tray with a generous spread.

Tray contents of the cube steak rice bowl set

Cube steak rice bowl: thick-cut beef with a smoky char

The cube steak rice bowl is piled high with big, thick-cut beef steak. One bite and the juices filled my mouth, and the texture was really tender.

The sweet and salty special sauce has soaked right into the meat, and there's a faint smoky aroma, as if it was finished with a torch. Stir-fried green onion, onion and mushrooms, plus crunchy shishito peppers and cherry tomatoes, balance both color and texture perfectly.

I put a piece of sauce-soaked meat and grilled green onion on the rice, added a little wasabi, and it was so addictive I never got tired of it.

Mini udon in the set: a generous bowl in bonito broth

Even though it's the mini udon included in the cube steak set, the portion is quite generous. Deep, rich bonito (katsuobushi) broth packed with springy noodles!

It's topped with plenty of fried tofu, seaweed and tempura crumbs (tenkasu), making it a perfect side to sip between bites of the rice bowl. A cute rabbit-shaped fish cake was the eye-catching touch.

Side dishes and kkultteok (honey rice cake) dessert

At Haekbap Dongguk, a neat Japanese-style side dish bowl comes with pickled radish and two white honey rice cakes (kkultteok). After finishing the meal, a sweet rice cake made for a clean finish.

Haekbap's 5-piece fried chicken: worth adding as a side?

The hidden hero that rounded out this protein-packed meal alongside the meat rice bowl was the fried chicken (chicken karaage).

A separately ordered plate of Haekbap fried chicken

Besides the salad version in the set, I ordered 5 pieces of fried chicken separately, a whole plate, freshly fried and still steaming. Inside the golden, crispy coating was plenty of moist, tender chicken thigh, a textbook case of crispy outside, juicy inside.

Dipping it in the smooth white cream sauce doubles the nuttiness, and a sprinkle of chili powder (shichimi) on the sauce cuts the richness, so I enjoyed it down to the last piece. It's lightly savory and well seasoned, and I strongly recommend it as a side.
