Izakaya in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon: caviar sushi lunch omakase – Sori

Sori (소리) is a Japanese izakaya on the main road near Eulji University Hospital in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, serving a sushi-focused lunch omakase by day and drinks with small plates at night. The writer had the Sori lunch omakase, which ran from sesame tofu through sea bream, Spanish mackerel, tuna and abalone, flounder sushi topped with caviar, a pot rice set meal and dessert. Quiet, cozy and good value, Sori is a strong pick for an anniversary or a weekday business lunch in Daejeon.

Daejeon burger shop with bar seats for solo lunch: Downtown Burger

Downtown Burger Galleria Timeworld (다운타우너 갤러리아 타임월드) is a handmade burger restaurant in the basement food hall of the Galleria Timeworld department store in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. The writer went alone for a weekday lunch, ate the new chimichurri avocado burger set and took a cheeseburger to go, finding that the chimichurri sauce cut the richness of the patty and that the bar seats made eating solo easy. Downtown Burger is a good pick for an easy handmade burger lunch in Dunsan-dong, with department store parking included.

Bouquet de Villa is a new boutique stay in Won-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, close to Daejeon Station, set in a building designed by a Japanese architect in 1979 and reimagined with a French-European mood. The writer spent a weekend in Room A3, which has an indoor jacuzzi, a small terrace and a kitchen, and enjoyed Sungsimdang bread and Flying Pan pizza in the room. Bouquet de Villa is a great base for a Daejeon bakery trip, with Jeongdong Munhwasa and the Sungsimdang main branch both within walking distance.

Seongsu ramen shop: fried shrimp dipped in tomato broth, Menya Pomo

Menya Pomo Seongsu Branch (멘야포모 성수점) is a tomato ramen restaurant in a basement off Yeonmujang-gil in Seongsu, Seoul. At lunch the writer ordered the Real Tomato Ramen, an Indian-style Hanwoo (Korean beef) katsu ramen set, fried shrimp and a potato croquette; dipping the fried sides in the ramen broth was the highlight, and a long queue formed mid-meal. Menya Pomo Seongsu Branch is worth arriving early at lunch for unusual ramen paired with fried sides.

Lil' Burger The Hyundai Seoul connects underground to Yeouido Station and offers free parking with combined department-store receipts, making it an easy handmade burger stop for a date.

Red-brick Seongsu ice cream café for a hot day: mango & peach, Mellows

Mellows (멜로우즈) is a red-brick milk ice cream café in a Seongsu alley between Seoulsup Station and Ttukseom Station in Seoul. On a hot day, we ate mango ice cream and peach ice cream inside Mellows, then took 2 americanos to go on the way out. The fruit-topped milk ice cream isn't overly sweet, and with the red-brick charm and outdoor tables, Mellows is a café worth revisiting on a Seongsu outing.

Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese beef cutlet) restaurant on basement level 1 of the LG Seoul Station Building in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a weekend lunch during a heatwave, the writer ordered the double jumbo sirloin gyukatsu and the cold soba with fried shrimp set, grilled the gyukatsu to taste on a personal brazier, and found that the icy cold soba broth cut through the richness of the cutlet. With an underground route from Exit 10 of Seoul Station, Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch makes a good lunch meeting spot on a hot day.
