Daegu Korean restaurant for spicy naengmyeon: Taegyeongok

In short

Taegyeongok is a Korean restaurant in Jung-gu, Daegu, serving Seoul-style bulgogi and Hamheung naengmyeon. I had the small Seoul-style bulgogi, level 3 spicy naengmyeon, and three meat dumplings for a seriously filling meal. Verdict: the spicy naengmyeon and bulgogi pairing was especially satisfying.

I found this place while looking for a delicious, complete Korean meal. It is a newer Daegu restaurant, but it was already known as a good spot in Dongin-dong and near Kyungpook National University Hospital Station. The entrance felt neat and modern from the start, and its location on a major road made it very easy to find.

There is a menu board at the entrance, so you could spot it while passing by and be drawn right in.

As soon as you enter, the counter and kitchen are right in front of you, and the owner welcomed us kindly.

Tables on the right side of Taegyeongok

A neat Korean dining space in wood and white

There are two tables on the right side of the restaurant, while the left side opens into a larger area with more tables. The overall wood-and-white palette is clean, with color accents and decorative items throughout for a distinctly Korean feel.

There were seats perfect for two people, too.

Further inside, there were several tables for four. They had placed classic-looking decorative items, such as flowers and fans, so nicely that the atmosphere was really lovely. There was also a small bar table toward the back. Aprons hang on the wall for self-service use.

Traditional Korean alcohol and self-service aprons at Taegyeongok

Since this is a Korean food restaurant, I liked seeing many varieties of traditional Korean alcohol rather than just other drinks. This was our table for the day. The full glass walls gave the place a wonderfully open feel.

I thought packaging each set of utensils individually was both hygienic and thoughtful.

Each table has a tablet for ordering, and the menu photos on it made choosing much easier.

The menu offered a broad range of Korean dishes, from Seoul-style bulgogi and yukhoe (seasoned raw beef) to naengmyeon.

They also offer reservations and receipt reviews, for reference.

Taegyeongok basic side dishes

After ordering, they first brought out the side dishes. There were not a huge number of them, but every one was the kind of thing that makes you keep reaching for rice—well-seasoned and tasty.

A full spread of Seoul-style bulgogi and spicy naengmyeon

Ordering Seoul-style bulgogi and spicy naengmyeon together

Maybe because we arrived early on a weekday before the after-work rush, there were not many guests, and the food came out quickly. From the presentation alone, everything looked neat, pretty, and delicious. We ordered the small Seoul-style bulgogi and spicy naengmyeon.

Small Seoul-style bulgogi at Taegyeongok

Seoul-style bulgogi in a sweet, savory broth

The small Seoul-style bulgogi was ₩28,000. It came with a sweet, savory broth and tender Korean beef bulgogi; udon noodles can be added for ₩2,000, and you can add a bowl of rice as well. It looked a little different from the bulgogi we usually know, but that made it feel even neater and prettier—like trying something new—which was fun. It comes in small and large sizes, and since there were two of us, we chose the small. Since they sell so many other dishes, I recommend having the small one alongside something else.

Because it was Korean beef, it was naturally very tender, but it was not overly thin either; the slices had a decent thickness. The meat is already seasoned, so it can burn easily—keep the heat low and cook it on the grill. It is not extremely thick, so it cooks quickly. Underneath were broth and plenty of vegetables, including carrot, onion, mung bean sprouts, mushrooms, and napa cabbage. Once they are somewhat cooked, eat them with the meat; we were told to move the cooked meat down into the broth as we ate.

Of course the meat was tender with no off smell, and though the bulgogi seasoning was sweet, it was not overly intense, so it never became cloying and I kept eating it. Adding the assorted vegetables underneath gave it more texture and brought out their natural sweetness, making it even better. It goes well with rice, but it was also a truly great match for the naengmyeon sold here.

Level 3 spicy naengmyeon at Taegyeongok

Level 3 spicy naengmyeon, more intense than Buldak

The spicy naengmyeon was ₩12,000, and I ordered level 3. They had several Hamheung naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) options—mul (broth), bibim (mixed), mul-bibim, and spicy—and as someone who loves spicy food, I had to try the spicy version. With its slushy iced broth and incredibly cold bowl, it looked like one serving could chase away the summer heat. It seemed to be a mul-naengmyeon base with spicy sauce added, so visually it did not look very different from mul-bibim naengmyeon. But the instant I took a sip of the broth, I knew it was spicy naengmyeon, haha.

There were levels 1 through 5, and I chose the middle-ish level 3. I normally handle spicy food well, but the heat hit hard from the very first bite. It felt more intense than Buldak. My mouth did not hurt, exactly, but my stomach felt like it was burning? Still, in the end it did not become tiresome, and it paired so well with the meat that I was very satisfied.

Mustard and vinegar were served separately, too.

It was topped with pickled radish wraps, cucumber, egg, and tender meat, and even the noodle cooking was perfect. The noodles were thin and went down easily with a slurp, while the broth was refreshingly cool and tangy.

Taegyeongok meat dumplings that pair well with naengmyeon

Taegyeongok dumplings came three for ₩6,000. Since you cannot leave out dumplings when eating naengmyeon, I ordered these too. I liked that there was a three-piece serving, perfect for a taste, and the steam rising from them made them look so delicious.

Three Taegyeongok meat dumplings

These meat dumplings were mild and packed generously with filling, and they went so well with the naengmyeon that I recommend trying them together. On the way out, mouthwash and toothpicks were also set out neatly. They were such thoughtful supplies to use after a meal that I left impressed right to the end.

A complete Korean meal in a neat space

This is a place where you can calmly enjoy various Korean dishes in a spacious, comfortable, and neat setting. The bulgogi, naengmyeon, and dumplings I ordered were all above average, and I left pleasantly full. The owner was extremely kind and full of thoughtful touches.
