Sangbuk, Ulsan bakery café drive: ham cheese focaccia at MUG

In short

MUG (카페 먹) is a large bakery café in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju, Ulsan, known for Tanmokwon, a building made of charred wood on land burned in the 2013 Eonyang wildfire, and for its Yeongnam Alps mountain views. The writer stopped at MUG with his wife on a weekend drive, ordered two Americanos (₩5,500 each), an injeolmi cream bun, a ham cheese focaccia and a cube apple cinnamon roll, then walked the forest trail behind the café. Wanting a break from the busy everyday grind, my wife and I took a weekend drive out of Ulsan. This time we visited MUG (카페 먹), a huge bakery café in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, famous for its Yeongnam Alps mountain views, striking architecture and tasty bread. Besides the grand scale, the place left a deep impression with its unique backstory, thoughtful facilities for families and dog owners, and high-quality desserts baked with French AOP butter. I've packed in everything from parking tips to honest menu impressions, so have a look!

Where is MUG in Sangbuk, Ulsan, and is parking easy?

MUG is at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, and the dedicated gravel lots at the front and side are free everywhere. It's close to KTX Ulsan Station and the Eonyang bulgogi district, so it's a good day-trip drive from Busan, Yangsan and the rest of Gyeongnam. Just a little outside the city, gentle mountain slopes and green rice fields open up in front of you, and the access road and surrounding roads are smooth, so even beginner drivers can get there at ease.

  • Address: 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan
  • Hours: daily 10:00–20:00 (last order 19:30, open year-round)
  • Parking: large dedicated gravel lots at the front and side (free everywhere)

Turn inward along the quiet road in Sangbuk-myeon and a imposing, deep ink-black building catches your eye, with the layered green ridges of the Yeongnam Alps behind it like a folding screen. Parking is usually the first hurdle at a big café, but a wide gravel lot stretches out right in front of the building, which takes that worry away.

Tanmokwon: the story behind MUG's charred-wood building

MUG was built on land damaged by the huge 2013 wildfire that swept through the Eonyang area, and its main material is charred wood (탄화목, wood that has been burned). Walking to the main entrance, you notice the distinctive wood texture wrapping the exterior without a gap. I'm told the space, called "Tanmokwon" (炭木園, charred wood garden), was created by preserving the trees that survived the fire and turning the character of burned wood into sculptural form.

The storytelling, which turns the pain of the fire into a space of healing and renewal instead of erasing it, made the place feel much deeper.

MUG's signature view: the water garden with zinnias

The artificial water feature stretching along the front of the building is MUG's most representative signature view. The blue sky, clouds and dark mountains are reflected on the water as sharply as in a mirror, and together with the colorful zinnias blooming around the edge, it feels like being at an exotic resort.

Inside MUG, you first reach a gallery lobby showing artworks. Cross the stepping-stone path, push open the heavy charred-wood main door, and a tidy gallery lobby greets you.

In the middle of the hall, a sculpture capturing the strong vitality of surviving trees is elegantly displayed, and on one side there's a Halloween-season photo zone with playful inflatable ghosts, pumpkins and a tree monster, which looked like a great spot for snapshots with kids.

MUG's main hall seating and mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows

MUG's main hall has a high ceiling and large front windows, so it feels very open. The moment I passed the gallery corridor and stepped into the main hall, I couldn't help exclaiming at the soaring ceiling and the openness of the windows. A long bar table runs through the middle of the hall, and comfy wooden tables and rattan chairs are set along the windows with generous spacing.

Best of all, beyond the big windows the kochia plants in the outdoor garden and the green mountain ridgeline unfold like a panoramic frame, and just sitting and looking at it made my eye strain melt away. Leaning back in a window seat, chatting while gazing outside, was perfect healing in itself.

What bread does the MUG bakery sell?

MUG's bread is said to be baked fresh each morning with LESCURE AOP butter from the Charente-Poitou region of France. After settling in, I headed straight to the bakery showcase neatly laid out in the middle of the shop.

The flashy lineup just keeps going: cube pastries and cinnamon rolls topped with thick, tangy fruit compote, hearty olive ciabatta that works as a meal, squid-ink dough doughnuts, plus six-clove garlic bread and croissants.

The refrigerated showcase holds lamington cake, a traditional Australian dessert, and seasonal tarts, all neatly lined up, so bread lovers can't take their eyes off it.

MUG drink prices

An Americano at MUG was ₩5,500 and the signature Meok black latte was ₩7,500. The menu board at the counter, under a tall concrete beam, also had a full range of fruit smoothies and ades.

Americanos and three breads at MUG: how did they taste?

We ordered a cold iced Americano and a warm hot Americano, plus three breads: injeolmi cream bun (injeolmi is roasted soybean-powder rice cake), ham cheese focaccia, and cube apple cinnamon roll.

MUG's Americano had no sharp acidity, just a rich, nutty flavor and a dark chocolate aroma, which made it a great match for sweet bakery items. Reading the brand story card that came with it, the care in a single cup of coffee felt even closer.

Injeolmi cream bun (roasted soybean powder cream bun)

The first thing I tried was the injeolmi cream bun, generously coated in nutty soybean powder, and the moment I cut it with a knife, soft injeolmi cream filling spilled out.

The chewy bread and the not-too-sweet, nutty cream is a combination anyone, young or old, would like.

Ham cheese focaccia

The plainly baked ham cheese focaccia, dotted with salty ham, cheese and chopped vegetables, was lightly warmed in the oven provided in the shop, and piping hot it made a great brunch-style meal.

Cube apple cinnamon roll

Last was the cube apple cinnamon roll, with fragrant cinnamon filling, moist cream and tangy apple compote layered inside thin, flaky pastry sheets, filling my mouth with deep buttery flavor.

Is MUG good with kids? High chairs and the self-serve bar

Inside MUG, plenty of baby high chairs are provided, so parents with infants and toddlers can stay comfortably. The self-serve bar also has clear dispensers with grapefruit, lemon and fresh herbs floating in them, which was nice for freshening up the mouth after eating.

The forest walking trail behind MUG

After tea at MUG, you really should go out through the door on the right of the counter to the forest trail behind the building. Along the gentle hill there's a quiet little pond with water lilies and outdoor metal tables, perfect for enjoying the mountain breeze.

Climbing the hill along a path of cosmos in full autumn bloom, you can see the dark curved roof and the surrounding forest at a glance. It was an ideal route for walking with a dog or for kids to tread on the soil.

MUG bakery café in Sangbuk, Ulsan: final verdict

MUG in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan was a one-of-a-kind cultural complex where you can see both the special narrative of turning the traces of the 2013 Eonyang wildfire into the artistic space of Tanmokwon, and the Yeongnam Alps mountain views.

MUG blending with the Yeongnam Alps views

Besides the excellent French AOP butter bakery, it has a large dedicated parking lot, thoughtful facilities for little ones, and a forest trail with a pond and flower path, so it's fine both for a romantic drive date and for a weekend family outing with kids. If you want to leave the city and enjoy the deep comfort of nature and a fragrant cup of coffee, I recommend heading out to MUG in Ulju this weekend!
