Jungangdong Station sashimi course with beef hot pot: Ppong Sashimi

Ppong Sashimi (뽕사시미) is a course-style sashimi restaurant with all private-room seating near Jungangdong Station in Jung-gu, Busan, close to Nampo. On a reserved weekend visit, two people ordered the 60,000 won per person assorted sashimi course, which came in order: table setting, sukidashi side dishes, sea bream, flounder and salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, seafood dishes such as cheese scallops, beef hot pot, cod soup and a fish roe rice bowl (albap) for each person. Ppong Sashimi's course is generous enough that even a full diner will still enjoy the final rice course.

Busan noodle shop under a celebrity autograph wall: Seomyeon Milmyeon

Seomyeon Milmyeon (서면밀면) is a milmyeon (Busan-style wheat cold noodle) restaurant about a 5-minute walk from Seomyeon Station in Busanjin, Busan. On a Busan trip, the writer walked into Seomyeon Milmyeon around 3pm on a Saturday with no wait. They ordered one each of mul milmyeon (noodles in cold broth), bibim milmyeon (spicy mixed noodles) and mandu (dumplings), and everything satisfied, from the warm starter broth to the chewy mandu with skins like potato-starch dough. If you want milmyeon near Seomyeon Station, Seomyeon Milmyeon's mul and bibim milmyeon with a side of mandu are well worth trying.

Daegu Gyodong pork restaurant with free kimchi stew: Juyukjeom

Juyukjeom Gyodong Main Branch (주육점 교동 본점) is a retro-style Korean pork restaurant in Gyodong, Jung-gu, Daegu. We ordered the black pork for 2-3 people (22,900 won), served on a bed of bean sprouts on an iron plate kept warm over a burner, plus doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and the kimchi stew that comes free with the meal was especially rich and spicy. With a 9,900 won lunch set as well, Juyukjeom Gyodong Main Branch is a solid pick for a filling meal in Gyodong.

Daegu Korean restaurant: pork rice pot & seaweed wraps, Geumdeungeo

Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch (금등어 달서구 직영점) is a hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) restaurant serving rice-pot sets on the 3rd floor of Jincheon Matta Town, near Jincheon Station in Dalseo, Daegu. The writer ordered the fire-grilled pork rice pot set with 400℃ oven-grilled mackerel added, which came with homemade side dishes, chard doenjang (soybean paste) soup and baekseolgi (steamed white rice cake) for dessert; wrapping the pork, pot rice and scallion salad in rock laver seaweed was the standout combination. Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch is a hearty choice worth returning to for a family meal or dinner with parents.

Dongseong-ro, Daegu Western restaurant with no break time: Resting07

Resting07 is a Western restaurant on the 2nd floor at Dongseong-ro 3-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu, serving pasta, risotto, pilaf, steak and pizza with no break time. Sharing chop steak pilaf (16,700 won), gamberi rose pasta (shrimp in tomato cream sauce, 15,700 won) and margherita pizza (17,700 won), the chop steak pilaf was the top pick, and the rose pasta and pizza beat expectations too. Galbi BBQ in Jongno, Daegu, formerly Ubok Geumsaeng Galbi: Jangjak

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch (벽돌 생갈비 종로점) is a charcoal-grilled fresh beef short rib restaurant on the main alley of Jongno in Jung-gu, Daegu, said to be the former Ubok Geumsaeng Galbi with only the name changed and the same taste and ingredients. Staff grilled the 500g brick-cut fresh galbi and the Uiseong garlic galbi all the way through, served alongside a cypress-steamed dish, bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). Galbi dipped in garlic sauce with white rice was the standout, making Jangjak Saenggalbi a satisfying pick for fresh galbi in Jongno.

Yukyeonjeong Gyodong Branch (육연정 교동점) is a Korean pub in Gyo-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, specializing in mungtigi (thick-cut raw beef) made from hanwoo (Korean beef) slaughtered the same day. The mungtigi platter set brings mungtigi, raw skirt, raw brisket and ankimo (monkfish liver) together, and the raw brisket, eaten uncooked instead of grilled on the mini grill that comes with the set, was especially nutty and clean-tasting. For fresh raw hanwoo with drinks in Gyo-dong, Yukyeonjeong Gyodong Branch is a satisfying choice.

Banwoldang Station hanok bar in Daegu with hash brown fries: Sangbong

Sangbong Dongseong-ro is a hanok-style Korean pub on an alley off Dongseong-ro 3-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. Arriving a little after 7 pm on a Monday, the writer found Sangbong full, waited about 15–20 minutes, then ordered slushy draft beer, boneless chicken feet soup and fries served with hash browns, plus a tomato draft beer ordered out of curiosity. The wait was worth it, and Sangbong Dongseong-ro is a satisfying Daegu bar for anyone who enjoys Korean drinking food.

Toriaejeu Sangin Daegu Branch is a charcoal-grilled yakitori izakaya near Exit 3 of Sangin Station in Dalseo-gu, Daegu, serving skewers with soju, highballs and sake. At Nampo the writer ordered the clam grill set for 2–3 people and, after the free pork cutlet and shabu-shabu with kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), tried cheese scallops, abalone prepared by the staff and pen shell in a spicy marinade. Fresh clams and a spacious, calm room make Nampo an easy choice for a date or a group night out.
