On the way back from a trip to Ulsan I wanted a proper, filling meal, so I stopped at Jongga Dwaejigukbap (종가돼지국밥) Jung-gu branch! With pork gukbap (pork and rice soup), the broth matters, but you can't ignore how clean the place is or how the side dishes taste, haha. This branch stuck in my memory because the gukbap was good and the inside was seriously spotless. Let me walk you through what I felt after actually eating there :)

I've been to quite a few gukbap places, but this was the first one that struck me as this clean…!!

"Rich gukbap boiled in a cauldron"… that line got my boyfriend, the gukbap Michelin guide himself, all hyped up, lol. Whether it lives up to that, check below…🤭

And I totally agree with that line!!! There's no gamey smell at all, and the gukbap tastes as clean as the restaurant looks. Top notch…

It was also handy that the restroom is inside the restaurant! You don't have to go outside in the middle of a meal, and the whole place felt comfortable to eat in.

Here's the menu!! They have pork gukbap, assorted gukbap and offal gukbap, and the suyuk baekban at ₩13,000 is a reasonable price!! The weather had warmed up, but we still craved hot gukbap, so we ordered two sundae gukbap without a second thought, haha.

  • Suyuk baekban ₩13,000

They also had bulgogi baekban and naengmyeon! Alcohol is ₩4,000, so soju with your gukbap is a good idea~

Self-bar, side dishes and dadaegi

Spotlessly kept self-bar at Jongga Dwaejigukbap

Water and extra side dishes are self-service, so I checked out the self-bar, and it was gleaming, maybe the cleanest of any restaurant I've been to… I even caught a glimpse of the kitchen, and I was like, huh?! How do they keep it this clean? It was so neat and lovely🥹

The side dishes are seasoned chili peppers, kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), haha.

Also, in Gyeongsang-do you can't have dadaegi (seasoned chili paste) without buchu (garlic chives), right?! I don't put dadaegi in mine, but my boyfriend ate it with gusto, lol. The sauce containers were shockingly clean too… unbelievable.

How does the sundae gukbap at Jongga Dwaejigukbap taste?

The sundae gukbap (₩10,000) at Jongga Dwaejigukbap Jung-gu branch was generously loaded with sundae and meat, the sundae was the native-style kind rather than the chewy glutinous kind, and there was no gamey smell at all. The kimchi was memorably good too.

The moment it arrived I noticed how generous the portion is!! Plenty of sundae and a lot of meat, so I felt full before even eating!!

Bowl of sundae gukbap loaded with sundae and meat

It's a letdown when gukbap has too little in it, but this one has plenty of sundae and meat, so I was super happy!! See the amount? hehe. Every spoonful came up with solid bits, which made it satisfying to eat🤤

If you don't like chewy sundae, try the native-style sundae

And the star of sundae gukbap is the native-style sundae (tojong sundae)…!!! I don't love the chewy, slippery texture of glutinous sundae, so I liked that Jongga uses the native style, haha.

Odor-free sundae gukbap broth and ingredients

Best of all, I couldn't smell any gaminess at all!! Even people sensitive to that pork smell may worry when eating gukbap, but I ate happily with nothing bothering me🙂↕️

Kimchi eaten with the sundae gukbap

And "if you want to know whether a restaurant is good, try the kimchi" <- any Korean will know that saying, lol. The kimchi at Jongga is definitely memorable. Yum yum, so tasty…

Finally I added somyeon (thin wheat noodles) and slurped them up, and it was such a filling, hearty meal, haha. The noodles blended well with the broth, so I enjoyed it to the very end!
