Konkuk Univ. bakery with my husband for tomato cheese pastry: Stack

In short

Stack Bakery Konkuk University Station Main Branch is a croissant and French-style pastry bakery café in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, where every batch is made in-house daily, from early-morning dough to baking. The writer visited with her husband around 11am, when the most bread is out, and tried a plain croissant and Americano set, tomato cheese pastry, Maldon salt bread, choco flan and pain au jambon fromage for a little over ₩20,000. Verdict: Stack Bakery offers freshly baked in-store bread at reasonable prices for Seoul.

Why we went to Stack Bakery's main branch near Konkuk Univ. Station

Stack Bakery Konkuk University Station Main Branch is a bakery café in the Konkuk Univ. area of Jayang-dong. My husband had a full-face mole removal in the neighborhood, and even though his face was burning and sore, he said he still wanted some good bread. So I took him to this Jayang-dong bakery, Stack Bakery Konkuk University Station Main Branch.

What time should you go to Stack Bakery for the most bread?

They say 11am is when Stack Bakery has the most bread out. We happened to arrive around 11, and the shelves were full of delicious-looking bread.

The moment we walked in, the place smelled amazing 😆 At this Konkuk Univ. bakery, they do everything in the store every dawn, from mixing the dough to baking. It focuses on croissants and French-style pastries, so there are a huge number of pastry types.

Stack Bakery 2nd-floor seating and atmosphere

At Stack Bakery you pick your bread on the 1st floor and eat on the 2nd floor. We chose our bread downstairs and headed up!

The 2nd floor is clean and quiet. There are seats facing the big windows and regular tables. I thought it would be a nice spot to come alone with a laptop for coffee and bread, haha.

How much did 5 pastries and coffee cost at Stack Bakery?

We got all this bread plus coffee for roughly ₩20,000-something at Stack Bakery. Considering bakery prices in Seoul, I think it's really reasonable to get bread baked in the store at this price.

Iced Americano at Stack Bakery

How was the Americano?

They say the coffee at Stack Bakery is brewed from beans blended by a roaster with 15 years of experience. The acidity was moderate, and personally I thought the iced Americano was cold and really delicious, wow.

Which Stack Bakery pastry do I recommend most?

Tomato cheese pastry (₩4,500)

What I'm totally recommending today is the Stack Bakery tomato cheese pastry (₩4,500). The combo of dried tomato, cheese and crispy pastry worked well as a meal replacement. The second I bit into it, my eyes went wide 👀 and I shouted, this is so good 👍

Pain au jambon fromage at Stack Bakery
Cross-section of the pain au jambon fromage with ham and cheese

Pain au jambon fromage, ham and cheese pastry (₩5,800)

The pain au jambon fromage (₩5,800) seems to be one of Stack Bakery's best sellers (when we left, only a few were left). It was my pick too, but really my husband's pick. It has ham and cheese inside, crispy outside and hearty and moist inside, so it's filling. Best of all, it wasn't too salty and tasted great.

Maldon salt bread at Stack Bakery

Maldon salt bread (₩3,000)

The Stack Bakery Maldon salt bread (₩3,000) was the textbook crispy-outside, moist-inside. Salt bread has gotten so expensive lately, but Stack Bakery is up on taste and down on price. If you come here, stock up on at least one salt bread.

Plain croissant

I could see why the plain croissant at Stack Bakery is the signature. The layers shatter crisply, and inside it's chewy with a subtle butter aroma. It sticks to the basics, yet I kept reaching for more!

Choco flan and plain croissant at Stack Bakery

Choco flan (₩5,200)

And the grand finale: the choco flan (₩5,200). It also has a thick chocolate filling inside the pastry, and the crispy pastry went well with the moist, rich chocolate.
