While looking for a Yeonnam-dong bakery, I stopped by Mandong Jegwa (만동제과) Yeonnam Branch, which is also famous as a Hongdae favorite (。•ω•。) It has over 10,000 Naver reviews and a 4.5 star rating, so I'd been curious for ages :) I heard the garlic baguette is especially popular, so I browsed the breads and packed up a bunch of things to take home.
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch: location, hours and parking
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is at 32 Yeonhui-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, and is open daily from 11:00 to 21:00. There's no parking (see the no-parking sign in front of the shop), Naver reservations are available, and it offers takeout and wireless internet. It's a convenient spot to reach from Yeonnam-dong.

The black brick building has "Mandong Jegwa" written in white, so it caught my eye from far away (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶) Next to the entrance, a big wooden board reads "We will bake the best bread in Korea" with a huge "bread" (빵) character, and that confidence made me even more excited. The brown wooden door and old-fashioned patterned glass windows gave it the retro vibe that's so typical of Yeonnam-dong bakeries (◍´꒳`◍)

A sign on the door says open at 11:00 and close at 9 pm, so it seems like a good place to buy bread even late. Parking is difficult, so I'd suggest public transport or walking.

What breads does Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch sell, and how much are they?
It's self-serve: you pick breads from trays lined up along the wooden wall. Once inside, trays of bread stretch out in a row, and choosing what to pick up while browsing was half the fun ⸜(๑'8'๑)⸝

The shop had a really wide variety of breads on display.
- Injeolmi (rice cake bread with roasted soybean powder) ₩3,500
- Rump (cream bread) ₩3,500
- Ang cream ₩3,500
- Sweet potato ₩3,500
- Yakbap bread (sweet rice bread) ₩3,800
- Tortilla ₩4,300
- Corn mayo ₩4,900
- Mugwort tteok (rice cake) ₩4,900
- Chestnut loaf ₩4,900
- Emmental ₩5,200
- Shrimp baguette ₩5,800
- Chestnut red bean mugwort ₩7,200 (NEW)

The price list is also written in English and Chinese, so foreign visitors should find it easy to choose :)

Takeout and eating in at Mandong Jegwa: how does it work?
Each bread comes in a clear bag printed with "Mandong Jegwa," which makes taking it away easy. The chestnut loaf came in a semi-transparent bag densely printed with the logo, and it gave the bakery a nice brand feel (♡´艸`)

I heard you can eat the bread at Ediya Yeonnam-dong branch next door if you order one drink per person, so that's worth knowing if you want to eat on the spot.

What are the free samples like at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch?
While I was browsing, a staff member kept cutting bread and handing me samples (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)و The cross-section of the sample was soft and fluffy with a tight, well-formed crumb, and from the first bite I thought, "I have to buy this." Being able to taste before choosing is a big plus even among Yeonnam-dong bakeries :)

Injeolmi, ang cream and chestnut red bean mugwort breads that caught my eye
The injeolmi bread was generously coated in nutty soybean powder, so I expected a chewy, rice-cake-like texture. The ang cream had a rough surface dotted with grains, which looked healthy. The chestnut red bean mugwort was a new item marked NEW, and it was big enough to share. With corn mayo, mugwort tteok and Emmental cheese bread too, there were so many breads I couldn't decide (。♥‿♥。)

Mandong Jegwa bread as a pre-work breakfast
Laid out on a wooden plate, the bread I brought home from Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch was a colorful mix: a crunchy bread topped with almonds, a soft bread dusted in white powder, and a small golden one. At home I've been taking one out at a time before work, and it makes a filling, nice breakfast :)

Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth visiting as a Yeonnam-dong bakery?
If you're looking for a Yeonnam-dong bakery, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is definitely worth a visit. They kept offering samples, so I could taste before choosing, and the huge variety made picking really fun.

Parking is hard, but with prices starting at ₩3,500, I could load up on several breads without worrying. Next time I definitely want to try the popular garlic baguette. I recommend it to anyone looking for both a Yeonnam-dong bakery and a Hongdae favorite (。♥‿♥。)
