Gangnam Station Japanese spot: scallop croquette to panna cotta, Ilpum

Ilpum Gangnam Branch (일품 강남점) is a kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) and sushi restaurant in Seocho, Seoul, about a 5-minute walk from Gangnam Station Exit 6. An order of Hokkaido scallop cream croquette, sushi of the day and kaisendon came with miso soup, chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), cold udon and mango panna cotta served one after another, so the meal felt like a full course. With a water purifier at every table and plenty of coat hangers, Ilpum Gangnam Branch is a solid pick when you want proper Japanese food near Gangnam Station.

Over a date, the writer had the Chimney Choco Sora and Peanuts House chimney breads with an Americano and Chimney Mansion Tea, a hibiscus blend; cutting the bread with cute little scissors was fun, and the sofa seats and terrace suited a date well. For European-style desserts and plenty of seating in Hongdae, Chimney Mansion is a good choice.

Godeok, Pyeongtaek Chinese restaurant for jjajangmyeon fans: Jangsu

Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom (장수짬뽕전문점) is a Korean-Chinese restaurant specializing in jjambbong (spicy noodle soup) on Godeokbuk-ro in Godeok, Pyeongtaek, close to the Songtan US military base. Two people ordered jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), meat jjambbong and a small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork, 15,000 won); the sweet, savory jjajangmyeon and the tangsuyuk that stays crispy even with the sauce poured on stood out. Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom is a jjambbong shop that is also worth recommending for its jjajangmyeon.
