Post-tennis café in Yeongjongdo: moonlight drip, choco donut, 5PM

5PM sunset hour is a dessert café on the first floor of the KCC Swichen Sangga-dong shopping building in Yeongjong Sky City, Yeongjongdo, Incheon, running as a café by day and an unmanned space late at night and early morning. On a Sunday tennis-match day, the writer stopped by around 4 PM and had moonlight drip coffee, decaf cold brew, a chocolate donut, a nata (Portuguese egg tart) and butter rice cake on the outdoor benches; the salt bread had already sold out. Verdict: 5PM sunset hour is a tasty Yeongjongdo dessert café with a lovely feel that recalls Porto.

Cham Dwaejitgan Bucheon Sinjungdong Branch (참돼짓간 부천신중동점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Exit 3 of Sinjungdong Station in Bucheon, where staff grill the meat for you over rice-husk charcoal. On a weekday evening after work, the writer shared pork belly, pork neck and gabrisal (pork jowl-shoulder cut), dipped in mushroom wasabi sauce and finished with minari (water dropwort) fried rice, and staff even brought milk thistle along with the beer. From the meat to the thoughtful service, Cham Dwaejitgan is a satisfying pork belly spot in Sinjungdong, though there is no parking.

Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil mochi shop: 5 flavors after lunch, Tareudang

Tareudang is a takeout dessert shop for fruit mochi and fruit sando on Hwangridan-gil at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju. On a Monday around 1 PM, with 6 people buying ahead, the writer picked pineapple, gold kiwi, melon, mango and Dubai banana fruit mochi and saved 2,000 won with the 4-or-more discount; the chewy glutinous rice and whole fruit made one more feel tempting even after a filling lunch. If you choose just one dessert on a Gyeongju trip, Tareudang is worth a return visit.

Bucheon noodle shop with thick kongguksu and tofu snacks: Jakdong

Jakdong Hongdukkkae Kalguksu (작동홍두깨칼국수) is a Korean restaurant specializing in kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and kongguksu (cold soy milk noodles) at the end of a forest path near Kkachiul Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. The writer, a regular, walked from Kkachiul Station, started with barley rice and fresh geotjeori kimchi, ate kongguksu whose soy broth is cheese-thick and comes already seasoned, and bought tofu snacks from the counter stand. For anyone who loves a nutty, savory flavor, the kongguksu at Jakdong Hongdukkkae Kalguksu is a bowl worth coming back for every summer.

First fried jokbal on a packed weeknight in Bucheon: Kkalkkali

Kkalkkali Jokbal Bucheon Branch (깔깔이족발 부천점) is a jokbal (braised pork trotters) restaurant between Bucheon Station and Bucheon University in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, and the company-run Bucheon branch of Kkalkkali Jokbal, known for its Mokdong flagship and Hongdae branch. On a weekday evening the writer ordered a half-and-half of fried and original jokbal at Kkalkkali Jokbal Bucheon Branch. The fried jokbal, whose skin itself is fried crisp rather than coated in flour batter, was so good the writer kept eating even when already full from dessert. Kkalkkali Jokbal Bucheon Branch is worth a return visit on a night for beer and fried jokbal.

Ganghwa duck restaurant instead of raw fish: samchae duck, Deok Ori

Deok Ori Jumulleok Ganghwa Main Branch (덕오리주물럭 강화도본점) is a duck jumulleok (stir-fried marinated duck) restaurant on Manisan-ro in Gilsang-myeon, Ganghwa, Incheon, close to Jeondeungsa Temple, Mount Manisan and the Ganghwa Luge. After raw fish and greasy meat had upset the writer's stomach, the writer booked ahead, arrived at opening time and ate samchae duck jumulleok and fried rice at a window seat, enjoying the smoky flavor from briquette pre-grilling, a seasoning that isn't too strong, homegrown leafy greens and refillable side dishes. For a gentle, healthy meal on a Ganghwa trip, the samchae duck jumulleok at Deok Ori Jumulleok is a good choice.

Bucheon Station bakery, overslept: rye loaf left at 11am, Chamsae Bori

Chamsae Bori Sikppang, Bucheon main branch is a takeout-only barley bread bakery about a 5-minute walk from Bucheon Station, near the Simgok Overpass intersection in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. The blogger planned to be there for the 10am opening but overslept and arrived at 11am, when the Grand Prize and grain barley loaves were sold out, so they bought the rye barley loaf (₩3,700), strawberry jam, mascarpone fresh cream and a financier. Thanks to the mascarpone fresh cream loaf sample and the mild, easy-on-the-stomach rye barley loaf, the blogger vowed to arrive before 10am next time.
