A handmade burger isn't good just because the patty is thick. The bun, patty, vegetables, cheese and sauce all need to be in balance so you can enjoy it comfortably down to the last bite. Add sides that go well with a burger, like fries or corn ribs, and the meal gets even better.
At Bored & Hungry Mapo (보어드앤헝그리 마포), I ordered the Chipotle Spicy Burger, the Shrimp O.G Burger, corn ribs and a set of French fries. It looked seriously hearty from the start, and I was impressed that despite the big portions, the lineup let the flavor of the ingredients come through without feeling heavy.

Where is Bored & Hungry Mapo?
Bored & Hungry Mapo is at 36 Gwangseong-ro 6-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, on the first floor, about 251 m from Exit 4 of Daeheung Station. It's an easy walk from the station, and not hard to reach from Sinchon or Sogang University either.
Bored & Hungry is a handmade burger brand with a trendy feel and original menu items. You can try burgers made with fresh ingredients, signature items with a Korean touch, and a variety of sides all in one place.
The burger wrappers, tray liners and side containers all use the shop's own characters and colors. It has a lively vibe that reminds you of an American burger diner, and when the food comes out all at once, the table fills right up.

What should two people order? A tray filled with burgers and sides
This time I ordered the Chipotle Spicy Burger, Shrimp O.G Burger, corn ribs and French fries. The two burgers are tall and bulky, and the sides are generous too, so it's reassuring just to look at.
The burgers here aren't just a patty between buns. With plenty of patty, vegetables, cheese and sauce, even one burger fills you up.
If two of you visit, getting one different burger each and sharing sides like corn ribs and fries works well. Each burger tastes distinctly different, so it's fun to swap bites.
How spicy is the Chipotle Spicy Burger?
The Chipotle Spicy Burger centers on a thick meat patty, loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and more. The rich patty gets a kick from a chipotle-style sauce, so it makes its presence known from the first bite.
The spice doesn't drown out the other ingredients. It's just enough heat to bring out the patty's flavor, and the cheese smooths everything together. Fresh lettuce, tomato and red onion add crunch and freshness.
The patty and sauce are rich, but the generous vegetables keep the whole thing from feeling heavy. The bun is soft too, so it blends naturally with everything inside.
If you usually like something a bit sharper and spicier than a basic cheeseburger, this one should suit you. You get spice, meaty flavor and fresh veggies all at once, so it doesn't get tiring until the end.

What is the shrimp patty in the Shrimp O.G Burger like?
The first thing you notice in the Shrimp O.G Burger is the thick, fried shrimp patty. It's big enough to stick out past the bun, and the golden surface looks crunchy just to look at.

Bite in and you get the crunchy surface along with a moist, springy inside. The savory, mild shrimp flavor is joined by the freshness of lettuce and red onion, and a creamy sauce ties each ingredient together gently.
Shrimp burgers can get greasy fast if the breading is too thick or the sauce is sweet. The Shrimp O.G had a good ratio of vegetables to sauce, so even with a thick patty it ate relatively clean.
The patty itself is big enough that one burger is plenty filling. If you prefer the rich flavor of a meat patty, the Chipotle Spicy suits you; if you like crunch and the mild taste of shrimp, the Shrimp O.G is the better pick.
Are the corn ribs worth ordering? Juicy corn and seasoning
Corn ribs are a fun side to order with a burger. Corn is cut into long strips and grilled, then served with plenty of seasoning, cheese powder and herbs.
Red seasoning and white powder sit on top of the golden corn, and it looks appetizing. The kernels are springy, and a natural sweetness comes through as you chew.
The sweet corn and salty seasoning make a natural sweet-and-salty combo. The occasional hit of spice keeps the corn from tasting bland.
Corn ribs are great to nibble on between bites of a rich burger. After the meaty flavor, you get the mild sweetness of corn, and it pairs naturally with the Shrimp O.G Burger too. If you want a side that's different from ordinary fries, they're worth ordering. They're my absolute favorite item.
Crispy, salty French fries with a creamy dipping sauce
The French fries at Bored & Hungry Mapo are cut thin and long and come in a generous pile. The seasoning coats the potatoes evenly, so they aren't bland even without a separate sauce.
They're crispy outside and soft inside. They're nice to pick at between bites of a thick burger, and the portion is big enough to share among several people.
Dipping them in the creamy sauce that comes with them makes the fries taste even richer. The sauce is nutty with a faint spiciness, so it goes well with the corn ribs too, not just the fries.
Alternating fries and corn ribs while eating the burger keeps the textures from getting monotonous. The contrast between crispy fries and springy corn is clear, so I could finish every side without leaving any.

Why the big burger portions don't feel heavy
The strength of Bored & Hungry Mapo is its generous portions. The burgers are tall, the patties thick, and the vegetables plentiful. The fries and corn ribs aren't just garnish either; they're real portions you can properly share.
A hearty lineup doesn't mean everything feels greasy and heavy. In the Chipotle Spicy Burger, the vegetables freshen up the rich patty, and in the Shrimp O.G Burger, the mildness of the shrimp patty balances with the crunch of the vegetables.
The corn ribs let you taste the natural sweetness of corn, and the fries are crispy and salty enough to go well with a burger. I also liked that every item had a different flavor and texture, so the whole spread never felt monotonous.
It's also a good fit for visiting in a group, ordering a variety and sharing. If you've been disappointed by handmade burgers with small portions, the hearty lineup at Bored & Hungry Mapo may satisfy you.

Verdict: Chipotle Spicy vs Shrimp O.G, plus the corn ribs
The Chipotle Spicy Burger pairs a thick meat patty with the gentle heat of chipotle sauce. The Shrimp O.G Burger centers on a crunchy, thick shrimp patty, with a mild flavor and a satisfying fullness.
The corn ribs worked well with their springy corn and salty seasoning, and the fries matched nicely with their crispy texture and creamy sauce. Overall the portions were generous, yet the patties, vegetables, buns and sauces were balanced enough that it never felt like too much.

If you're looking for a hearty handmade burger near Daeheung Station and Sinchon, or want to try a chipotle burger and a shrimp burger together, I recommend Bored & Hungry Mapo. Beyond the burgers, the corn ribs and fries made it a meal that delivered on both flavor and quantity.
Order the corn ribs! They're the kick.
