Anyone who's spent time in Seomyeon, Busan, can't not know this spicy braised ribs place. I used to hang around Seomyeon a lot as a kid, and this is one of the restaurants that's stayed open all these years.

This is Sinchon Yangpuni. It's such an old, well-established galbijjim spot in Seomyeon that it's pretty famous among locals. Located near Seomyeon Station! Book through Naver reservation and you get a free seafood potato pancake — definitely recommend reserving before you go!

The new annex across from the original Sinchon Yangpuni
I heard a clean new annex opened across from the original store, so I went to check it out. Especially exciting since they said they use domestic pork back ribs and no capsaicin, which raised my expectations.

Galbijjim really is all about that red, spicy sauce, right? This time I decided to add a bunch of extras to eat a little more lavishly.
What side dishes come with the galbijjim?

After ordering, the basic side dishes came out first — acorn jelly, perilla leaves, pickled onion, corn, soup, and sauce. They're mostly banchan meant to balance out the spicy galbijjim. The corn was way more delicious than I expected, so I refilled it a few times, and the staff were so kind about it. And since I'm a total perilla leaf fanatic, wrapping the ribs in perilla was really tasty.
Half an octopus on top: a full pot from the first look

It felt like a shame to just eat the galbijjim plain this time, so I added half an octopus and glass noodle sides. And of course, the essential pour-over cheese! But the octopus turned out to be way bigger than I expected, catching my eye the moment it arrived.

A staff member cut it into easy-to-eat pieces, and the tabletop burner kept everything warm the whole time. The galbijjim meat was tender, so it came off the bone easily, which was also great — some places make you debone it yourself, but here they handled it for us, which made everything much easier.
How spicy is level 1 at Sinchon Yangpuni?

You can't skip the rice balls with your galbijjim either. Since spice level is adjustable, spice lovers can order to their own taste too. I can't handle spicy food well, so I went with the mildest level 1. Eating the savory rice balls together with the ribs made everything taste even better. Carbs forever!!!

Still, the signature spicy kick of galbijjim was still there, and pouring cheese over it made it even smoother. Since it kept simmering warm, the cheese never hardened and kept stretching softly. Even a spice wimp like me could eat all the way through without feeling overwhelmed.

There's also a handy tip sheet on how to eat it best. Take a look and be sure to give it a try.

A lunch spot in Seomyeon, and a soju spot at night
A solid choice if you're looking for a long-running galbijjim spot in Seomyeon or want a hearty meal. It works well for a filling lunch, and it's just as good with a glass of soju. Having stayed in Seomyeon for so long, it's a restaurant worth visiting at least once.

The glass noodles soaked up the spicy sauce so well, and they were delicious. I really recommend everyone get the glass noodle side too!!

You can choose your sides to taste, so there's plenty of fun in picking. Next time I want to try the sweet pumpkin and cheese combo.
