Namhansanseong café with free weekday parking and packing station: Sum
In short
Sum (카페 숨) is a large bakery café in Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. On a weekday daytime drive, the writer parked for free, explored the floor-to-ceiling window seats on floors 1 and 2 and the birch-forest-themed annex, and found an americano for 6,500 won and Mother's jujube tea for 9,000 won, alongside displays of salt bread, croissants and cakes. With self-serve wrapping paper and a microwave, Sum is worth returning to as the last stop on a Namhansanseong drive.

On weekends I hate just staying home, so I usually head out for a drive somewhere close, and this time it was Namhansanseong. It's not too far from Seoul, and I love driving along the mountain road, so I end up coming once every season.
When I come to Namhansanseong I can never just eat and head back down, so I always stop at a café. This time I finally went to Sum (카페 숨), which I'd had saved for a while.
Parking at Sum in Namhansanseong: free and roomy on weekdays
Parking at Sum is free and the lot is quite large. I went on a weekday so it was empty, but the spaces are so wide I think it would be fine on weekends too! 💖 You can tell the place is big from the moment you park and start walking in.

Inside Sum: how roomy are the 1st and 2nd floors?

The seating was more generous than I expected. The tables are spaced out, so the next table didn't bother me, and thanks to the high ceilings it didn't feel crowded even with lots of people. It was a perfect mood for a short rest after the drive.

The 2nd floor has plenty of seats too, so I don't think you need to worry about finding a spot.

The lighting is so, so pretty, right?
The mountains open up wide outside the windows, so even indoors it never felt stuffy.

Looking at the green scenery, I felt more relaxed before I'd even had a sip of coffee. I could see why this Namhansanseong café is so consistently loved.

I figured a photo taken from this seat would look so pretty that I took it as if in a trance. It's on the 1st floor, so if this seat is free, try sitting there!
Drink prices and bakery selection at Sum

Lots of baked goods are lined up at the café entrance, and the variety is huge. Salt bread, croissants, pastries, cakes... I went through them one by one and couldn't easily choose. Bread lovers will be happy here. No wonder it's a popular Namhansanseong bakery.

Honestly, big cafés often have a great space but average drinks and bread, right? I went in thinking a bit like that, but Sum was different from what I expected. The coffee was rich without being heavy, and the bakery had a real butter flavor that went well with the drinks. Prices are reasonable compared with other big cafés these days, so I liked that it's not just about the atmosphere.

Self-serve packing counter and microwave
On one side there's packing paper and disposable gloves for taking bread to go, plus a microwave for warming it up 😊 You don't have to bother asking the counter to pack things, which was so convenient.
Sum's annex with a birch forest concept

The annex at Sum is styled around a birch forest, and it has a totally different mood from the main space. White-toned interiors and warm wood go well together, so it felt much calmer. It felt like walking into a small cabin in the woods, and plenty of people were taking photos.
If the main space charms with its open feel, the annex seems better for people who want to spend time somewhere cozier and quieter.
I went when it was hot so I couldn't sit outside, but I think it would be nice to sit outside in autumn.

Overall review of Sum in Namhansanseong

I visited after a meal, and the route worked really well. Namhansanseong has many well-known restaurants, so going from lunch to a café felt natural. If you're looking for a place to enjoy dessert after eating at a Namhansanseong restaurant, Sum seems like a good choice.
There were families, couples and groups of friends, but the space is so big it didn't feel crowded. It's easy to stay a long time, and the atmosphere is good for conversation, so it was nice to spend time unhurried. For that reason I'd also recommend it to anyone looking for a large café in Gwangju, Gyeonggi.
Sipping coffee and watching the view outside, I lost track of time and rested for a good while. It was a space that gave my drive a happy ending. It's not just a big café; the view, bakery and drinks all satisfied me, so I'll stop by again next time I'm in Namhansanseong.

If you want a short getaway for some fresh air, add Sum to your Namhansanseong drive. With the open mountain views, the wide range of bakery items and the birch-forest annex, you can step away from everyday life for a while and relax.
