Suwon bar with perilla pollock roe pasta and shrimp jeon: Raon

In short

Raon Asian Dining Bar is a window-view Asian dining bar on the 11th floor of Useong Tower near Nahyeseok Street in Ingye-dong, Suwon. On a sunny day the writer ordered perilla-leaf pollock roe bibim pasta (16,000 won), shrimp namul jeon (a savory pancake with seasoned greens, 8,000 won), pickled tomatoes (5,000 won) and a mojito (11,000 won). The perilla cut the pasta's richness, and the shrimp namul jeon went perfectly with drinks. Raon Asian Dining Bar is a good pick for 11th-floor views and light Korean-Asian fusion bar food.

What is the atmosphere of the 11th-floor window view like?

Thanks to the open 11th-floor view through the floor-to-ceiling windows, Raon is a Nahyeseok Street bar that lifts your mood the moment you walk in. I'll share honest reviews of what I ordered while gazing at that pretty view!

What I ordered that day

  • Perilla-leaf mentaiko bibim pasta, 1 × ₩16,000
  • Shrimp namul jeon (savory pancake), 1 × ₩8,000
  • Pickled tomatoes, 1 × ₩5,000
  • Mojito (no sugar), 1 × ₩11,000
Perilla-leaf mentaiko bibim pasta

How does the perilla-leaf mentaiko pasta taste?

Raon's perilla-leaf mentaiko bibim pasta (₩16,000) blends the aroma of perilla leaves with salty mentaiko (spicy pollock roe) really well. Red mentaiko sits beautifully on the green perilla pesto sauce, and it made my mouth water just looking at it.

With the first bite, the fragrant perilla fills your mouth, followed by the salty mentaiko, and the two go together well. The perilla and shredded scallion cut right through what could have been a heavy, greasy pasta, so I could keep eating without feeling weighed down. Oriental ingredients and pasta come together naturally for an unusual combination.

Pickled tomatoes in a cocktail glass

Are the pickled tomatoes good as a palate cleanser?

The pickled tomatoes (₩5,000) were perfect for cleansing the palate after the pasta and jeon. They come in an elegant cocktail glass garnished with herbs and lemon, and look refreshing just to look at.

Sweet juice fills your mouth, which makes them ideal to eat in the middle of a meal. The sweetly pickled tomatoes have a tangy kick, so they cleanse the palate neatly.

Shrimp namul jeon with seasoned soy sauce

Is the shrimp namul jeon good bar food?

The shrimp namul jeon (₩8,000) is crispy outside and tender inside, served with a special seasoned soy sauce, and it was a satisfying snack with drinks. It's pan-fried golden and crunchy as if deep-fried, and the special soy dipping sauce comes in the center.

Biting in, the outside was crackly enough to hear, and I loved the fragrant namul (seasoned greens) with the springy shrimp.

Cross-section of the jeon with shrimp and namul

The more you chew, the better the namul and shrimp combination gets! Dip it in the salty, spicy sauce in the middle and I think nothing beats it as a drinking snack.

Mojito with lime and apple mint

Is the mojito too sweet?

Raon's mojito (₩11,000) isn't sweet, so it was easy to drink with a meal. The fresh, zesty scent of lime and apple mint went really well with the cool feel of the 11th-floor view, and the lime left a clean finish.

Raon was a place to enjoy a leisurely meal while looking out at the refreshing view through the 11th-floor windows. The menu reworks Korean and Asian styles in a modern way, and each dish had its own character, so choosing was fun.

With good food and atmosphere together, it suits dates, get-togethers with friends, or a special day when you want to set the mood. If you're looking for a Nahyeseok Street bar or a Suwon wine bar, I recommend Raon Asian Dining Bar for the mood, food and view all in one.
