Daegu izakaya beef tendon stir-fry at the bar: Gyodong Nakwon

In short

Gyodong Nakwon is an izakaya on Gukchebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, with regular tables, bar seats facing the open kitchen, and an outdoor-style group room at the back. After a first round in Dongseongno, the writer moved on to Gyodong Nakwon for a second round at the bar, ordering Asahi draft beer and soju with suji daepa bokkeum (beef tendon stir-fry with green onion) and Osaka beef brisket jjamppong soup. Gyodong Nakwon has more than atmosphere going for it — the portions are generous, which made it a satisfying second stop.

I was trying to figure out where to go for round two in Gyodong, and this place delivered on both vibe and food. Hearty Osaka beef brisket jjamppong hot pot, spicy-savory gopchang stir-fry, and ice-cold Asahi draft — the drinks just kept flowing. With an outdoor-style group section too, this is my pick if you're looking for a Gyodong bar, a Gyodong izakaya, or a group-friendly Gyodong spot: Gyodong Nakwon.

Why Gyodong Nakwon works as a second round after Dongseongno

It had been so long since I drank in Dongseongno, and after finishing round one, going straight home felt like a waste, so I headed to Gyodong Nakwon for round two. Gyodong has so many bars that picking one is always tricky, but this place looked busy and had a great atmosphere just walking by, so in we went.

Once inside, it really was packed. Customers kept streaming in the whole time we were there — it had that feel of a newly popular Gyodong bar right now.

Outdoor-style group room and the mood inside Gyodong Nakwon

I really liked the atmosphere at Gyodong Nakwon. Besides the regular tables and bar seats, there's a separate, spacious area further inside set up like an outdoor pojangmacha (street tent bar).

A baseball game happened to be on, and groups of customers were watching together while drinking. It looked lively and fun. With weather like this, drinking with that outdoor-tent feel is such a nice thing — this spot would suit anyone looking for a Daegu Gyodong outdoor drinking spot too.

The tables came in various sizes, good for visiting with a group, and there really were a lot of group customers — this would work well for a Daegu Gyodong group bar, a company dinner, or a hangout with friends.

Bar seats facing the open kitchen: the best seats in the house

Since this was round two, we wanted a more relaxed seat, so we sat at the bar seats at Gyodong Nakwon. And I was so glad we did — right in front of us was the open kitchen.

You could see straight into the kitchen, which made watching the food get made pretty fun, and more than that, the kitchen was really clean. An open kitchen isn't something you can pull off if you're not confident about hygiene, since customers see the whole cooking space. Watching the food come together kept the wait from feeling boring and it gave me more overall trust in the place. The complimentary side dish was shrimp chips, and honestly I kept reaching for those too, haha.

First glass: Asahi draft beer

We ordered Asahi draft beer and soju. First up, of course, draft beer! The glass was chilled, the beer came out ice-cold, and it was delicious from the very first sip.

Asahi's clean, crisp character really came through, and even before the food arrived, it went down easily with the shrimp chips. We'd already had a fair amount to drink in round one, but the draft beer was so good it felt like starting fresh all over again, haha.

Beef tendon stir-fry with green onion, spicy sauce and mayo

The first food we ordered at Gyodong Nakwon was gopchang (beef tripe) stir-fry with green onion. When it arrived, the portion surprised me — it was bigger than I expected. We'd ordered it thinking we'd eat light for round two, but honestly this alone could carry a proper drinking session, it was that generous.

The gopchang was chewy yet tender, stir-fried spicy with green onion, and it smelled great right away. The sauce itself leans spicy, but the mayonnaise drizzled on top softened the heat nicely.

The chewy texture of the gopchang, the sweetness of the green onion, the spicy sauce, and the savory mayo all coming together made for a really great combination. It wasn't just spicy and done — there was savoriness carrying through too, so my chopsticks kept going back for more. It went well with the draft beer, but personally I liked it even more as a soju pairing.

Osaka beef brisket jjamppong soup: hangover cure and drinking food in one

Then came the Osaka beef brisket jjamppong hot pot! I was surprised all over again by the portion the moment it arrived. It came out in a huge pot, seriously generous, and the staff set it on the table burner, telling us to just dig in once it started boiling.

So we waited a bit in front of it. As it started bubbling and the spicy smell rose up, I was already thinking about soju. Inside were bean sprouts and beef brisket, both piled in generously. I tried a spoonful of the broth first — it was spicy but rich, deepened by the savory flavor from the brisket. The bean sprouts kept their crunch, and the brisket was tender, so eating them together with the broth was really delicious.

Despite the name jjamppong (spicy noodle soup), this wasn't just about being intensely spicy — it had a deep, savory flavor from the meat alongside the heat. For people who've already been drinking in round one, this is the kind of dish that turns 'eating to sober up' into 'drinking all over again,' haha. A sip of broth, a shot of soju, a piece of brisket, another shot — before we knew it, we'd had quite a bit to drink even for a second round.

How big are the portions at Gyodong Nakwon?

Both dishes we ordered at Gyodong Nakwon came in seriously generous portions. Some Gyodong bars have great atmosphere but skimp a bit on food.

The Osaka beef brisket jjamppong hot pot in particular was enough for several people to share, and the gopchang stir-fry had plenty of gopchang packed in — satisfying either way. So if a few people visit and order a couple of dishes to split, this could work as a solid value option among Daegu Gyodong bars. With such a varied menu, it's good for a first round too, or as a second-round stop after drinking in Dongseongno or elsewhere in Gyodong, like we did.

Good for two, good for a group

Visiting in person, I found it worked well for a couple drinking together, but it seemed like it'd be even more fun with a bigger group. Watching customers in the back outdoor-style section drink while watching baseball made me want to come back next time with a bigger crew.

This would suit anyone looking for a Daegu meetup spot, a Daegu company-dinner venue, or a Dongseongno group bar. The bar seats facing the open kitchen are great for a quiet drink for two, while the back area is great for a livelier group — being able to pick your seat depending on the occasion was a real plus.

Customers kept coming in the whole time we ate. Gyodong itself is a hot neighborhood, sure, but there's always a reason certain places stay busy. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and above all, food that was both tasty and generously portioned — the satisfaction level was high.

Both the gopchang stir-fry and the Osaka beef brisket jjamppong hot pot were genuinely great drinking food. Starting with a cold Asahi draft and finishing with spicy jjamppong hot pot and soju, I properly enjoyed round two in Gyodong for the first time in a while. If you're looking for a Gyodong bar, a Gyodong izakaya, or a group-friendly Gyodong spot, this is a place worth trying for both atmosphere and food. Next time I want to come with a bigger group, sit in that back outdoor-style area, and try more of the other menu items.

Not just a bar with a good vibe — the food was generous and delicious too, making it an izakaya in Gyodong I want to go back to.
