Boryeong fish shop: flounder sashimi cut to group size, Nokdo Susan
In short
Nokdo Susan (녹도수산) is a second-generation sashimi shop with 40 years of history in the Daecheon Port fish market in Boryeong, Chungnam, where you pick live fish from the tanks and take the sliced sashimi to go. The writer ordered flounder, and the Nokdo Susan owner asked how many people would be eating and cut just the right amount; ice packs and ice under the sashimi kept the flounder fresh all the way to lodging near Daecheon Beach, where it was eaten with a complimentary sea squirt. For a Daecheon trip, Nokdo Susan is a good fit if you want fresh takeout sashimi without overbuying.

What is Nokdo Susan in Daecheonhang Fish Market like?
Nokdo Susan (녹도수산) is a raw fish restaurant inside Daecheonhang Fish Market, said to be famous for 40 years of second-generation skill and generous hospitality. They say it's a place that treats every order as if it were for their own family. Daecheonhang Fish Market is a must-stop on any Boryeong trip or Daecheon Beach visit, and here is my review of Nokdo Susan.

It's a great spot: you can look around nearby Daecheon Port, then pack up sashimi and eat it at your stay near Daecheon Beach.

What seafood is in the tanks at Nokdo Susan?
The tanks had live fish like flounder, rockfish, sea bass and red sea bream, plus raw shrimp, sea squirt (meongge), sea cucumber, spoon worms, octopus, king prawns and even king crab. As soon as I arrived at Nokdo Susan, the fresh seafood greeted me first.

Flounder, rockfish, sea bass and sea bream swam lively in clean tanks, and in season there were plump raw shrimp, sea squirt, sea cucumber, spoon worms and octopus. The variety was really wide.

Can you trust the price list and scale?
Nokdo Susan posts the origin and per-kg price openly and uses an electronic scale. No worries about being overcharged, and you can buy with a clear conscience, so my trust went way up. The king prawns looked huge and so tasty!

There was king crab too. For a family meal or hosting guests, nothing beats king crab. They were plump and properly full of meat.

I loved that the per-kg prices for each fish were written up clearly. There was flounder, and there was also the even tastier chal-flounder (chewier flounder). The king of sashimi fish is still flounder, I think, and it's easy on the wallet too.

See the flounder and sea bream? The water was so clean, maybe thanks to good upkeep, that the fish looked fresh and healthy. The water was really clear and milky white.

How much flounder sashimi should you buy at Nokdo Susan?
The owner asked first how many people would be eating, then picked a flounder in just the right amount. I ordered flounder, and I loved that the kind owner asked how many of us there would be.
At some places they push you to get a bigger one and you end up overbuying, which has happened to me before. Nokdo Susan clearly felt kind and sincere.

And now the flounder goes in for prepping.

My eyes went wide at those skilled hands. The flounder sashimi was done in no time.

Does Nokdo Susan takeout sashimi stay fresh to your stay?
The flounder takeout comes with ice packs and ice laid under the fish, so it stayed cold and fresh all the way to our stay near Daecheon Beach. Ta-da! I packed it up and hurried to the room.

The packaging is super neat, thanks to the ice packs and careful details that keep it fresh. The owner also threw in a free fresh sea squirt and a set of chojang (spicy vinegar sauce), wasabi and soy sauce. I was touched!

This is the sea squirt.

They even packed in sturdy ice packs. And here is today's highlight: the flounder.

How did the flounder sashimi at Nokdo Susan taste?
The flounder was thick and chewy, sweet and nutty with no fishy smell. The moment I unwrapped it at the room, the thick, glossy sashimi made me gasp.

With the first bite, that springy, chewy texture came with flounder's signature sweet, nutty flavor filling my mouth.

It's really fresh. With ice under the fish too, it felt like eating flounder that had just been caught.

No fishiness at all, just the bounce of freshly caught live fish, which was pure healing. The portion was generous too, and the warm hospitality left me really satisfied.
If you're visiting Boryeong and want fresh, generous takeout sashimi at a fair price, I highly recommend Nokdo Susan at Daecheonhang Fish Market, no hesitation!
