At The Sunsu Bread (더순수브레드) in Chimsan-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, I pre-ordered and picked up a low-sugar fruit cake made without sugar or flour. My kids absolutely love cake, so we buy one fairly often even when there's no special occasion 🎂 When I see how happy they are, I can't not buy it, but feeding them super-sweet cake every time weighs on my mind 🥹🥹

Then one day a friend told me there's such a thing as sugar-free cake! Sugar-free cake?! I was so curious. So I reserved one right away and went to pick it up at The Sunsu Bread in Chimsan-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu 🤍🤍 Here's my honest review of a Daegu low-sugar cake, and whether the kids could enjoy it too.

The Sunsu Bread location and parking

The Sunsu Bread is in the Myeongseong Prugio shopping arcade at 153 Chimsan-ro, Buk-gu, Daegu. For parking, you can stop briefly in front of the shop or use the apartment parking lot.

When I arrived, the bread-shaped sign sticking out caught my eye, so I knew right away: this is The Sunsu Bread! 🥖🥖 A tasty vegan bakery selling 100% plant-based rice bread that's gentle on the stomach? I was so curious 🤔

Besides cakes, The Sunsu Bread has a wide range of vegan bakery items on display, including plant-based rice bread. I only came to pick up a cake, so I was surprised by how many kinds of baked goods there were 🫢 Since it's a vegan bakery, it was fun to look at each one and see what they had, haha.

I thought they'd make good snacks for the kids, and would also be nice to pick out for my parents. The fact that it's a health-minded bakery caught my eye too ☺️☺️ I meant to grab the cake and go, but after looking around, I got curious about the other breads as well.

The Sunsu Bread menu and prices

Besides baked goods, The Sunsu Bread sells a variety of desserts, including açaí bowls, Greek yogurt, frozen yogurt, coffee and other drinks. It looked like a good place to drop in for a simple dessert too ☺️☺️

What kinds of sugar-free, flour-free low-sugar cakes are there?

Besides the low-sugar fruit cake, The Sunsu Bread has several other cakes, such as a black sesame cake and a cream cheese carrot cake. The low-sugar fruit cake I ordered is a non-vegan product, made without wheat flour, rice flour or sugar, and sweetened with erythritol, a sweetener derived from nature.

A cake with no sugar and no flour, isn't that amazing? My kids love cake and I'd been worried about the sugar, so this was a really welcome menu item.

I chose the fruit-topped low-sugar fruit cake from The Sunsu Bread 🤍🤍 A cake piled with fruit seemed like something the kids would love, so I was looking forward to it. The fruit on top can change depending on the season, so it's worth checking when you order.

The pastel-toned cake box was so pretty already 💖 The moment we got home, the kids were so excited to see the box ☺️🫢 We eat cake often even without an occasion, and with them this happy, how could I not buy it..... 🥹❤️ So this time I didn't tell them it was a sugar-free, low-carb cake. I just said ta-da! and showed it to them.

When I opened the box, it was packed with fruit, and just looking at it felt fresh and appetizing ☺️☺️ There was even a note on the cake saying it has no sugar or flour, which made it feel even more amazing. After the kids' favorite part, blowing out the candles, it was finally time to eat! It was my first time having a low-sugar cake too, so I was so curious what it would taste like 🤔🤔

How does the sugar-free low-sugar fruit cake taste?

The Sunsu Bread's low-sugar fruit cake tasted mild rather than strongly sweet, blended with the fresh tang of fruit. When I cut it in half, the fruit wasn't just on top, there were layers of fruit inside too 💛💛

Honestly, at first I worried it might taste worse than regular cake, but after one bite it was much better than I expected 👍 Instead of a strong sweetness like regular cake, it felt mild with the freshness of fruit coming through 🥝 I thought a sugar-free cake would taste a bit different, but it was tastier than I'd hoped, so I'm satisfied ❤️❤️

Did the kids notice it was a low-sugar cake?

I served the low-sugar fruit cake without saying it was sugar-free, and the kids said it was delicious and ate it up 💛 It's a little different from regular cake, but they didn't seem to notice a big difference, and watching them enjoy it made me feel proud.

Even as I kept buying cake, I worried whether I was feeding them something too sweet, and now a low-sugar cake turns out to be plenty tasty! Of course, sugar-free doesn't mean they can eat as much as they like, but I'm glad I have more choices when picking a cake the kids love ❤️❤️
