Zero Pay sashimi takeout at Garak Market fish shop Yeongjae Susan

In short

Yeongjae Susan is a fish shop and sashimi restaurant at unit C-10, first floor of the Sales Building in Garak Mall, Garak Market, Songpa-gu, Seoul. A small jeon-gwang-cham-hoe combo of autumn gizzard shad, flounder and red seabream cost 65,000 won and came packed in a cooler bag with an ice pack and a second wrap of plastic film, so it was still fresh after the ride home. Yeongjae Susan takes Zero Pay, local currency and Onnuri gift card payments and gives 3 hours of free parking, which makes it an easy place for takeout pickup.

Live fish in the tanks at Yeongjae Susan

At places like this seafood market I usually check how clean the tanks and cutting boards are, and overall it was pretty clean, so that put me at ease.

From gizzard shad, jack mackerel, flounder, red seabream, salmon, rockfish and mullet, which are great as sashimi, to snow crab, blue crab, shellfish and shrimp, which are great boiled, this would also be a good pickup spot for Chuseok holiday, right?

I especially heard the gizzard shad was delicious, so I ordered a mixed sashimi platter with gizzard shad in it.

Among the combos, jeon-gwang-cham-hoe and gizzard shad sashimi are especially popular, along with bluefin tuna sashimi and nong-gwang-cham-hoe.

The 65,000-won small sashimi combo, double-wrapped for takeout

What I ordered was the small jeon-gwang-cham-hoe combo — gizzard shad, flounder, and red seabream — for ₩65,000. It came packed in a cooler bag with an ice pack, and the sashimi got a second layer of plastic wrap.

I had it packed to eat at home, and they gave it to me like this, in a cooler bag with an ice pack.

You can add extras for spicy fish stew if you want, and as standard they give you the basic sauces — chogochujang (vinegared chili paste), wasabi, ssamjang (thick dipping paste), and soy sauce — which is convenient.

They wrap the sashimi in plastic film like this for a second layer, which helps block water dripping on the outside and cuts down the fishy smell too — nice touch!

Even though I had a bit of a distance to travel home, it was still fresh. I ordered the ₩65,000 small size, and the portion was generous too, so the value for money really won me over.

It was thick and chewy with a proper bite, and there was no fishy smell either, so even sashimi beginners could enjoy it — plus, being a mixed platter, you get to try a variety of types.

Depending on your taste, you can dip it in wasabi, ssamjang, or chogochujang — whatever combo you like — and it's genuinely delicious that way.

Since you can enjoy in-season fish through spring, summer, fall and winter, I make sure to visit Yeongjae Susan once each season.
