Yongsan tteokbokki spot, fried rice mixed with sauce: Hyeonseonine

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is an instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and Korean snack bar in an alley near Exit 6 of Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul. After eating at the Yeouido branch, a spice-shy couple went to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch for a weekend lunch of mild instant tteokbokki for two and fried rice; the restaurant was full, with a waitlist, by about 12:30. The verdict: stirring saved tteokbokki sauce into the fried rice was the cheat code of the day.

Catch-up over mala hot pot at a City Hall Chinese restaurant: Huhugwan

Huhugwan (후후관) is a Hong Kong-style Chinese restaurant on Seosomun-ro 11-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul, near City Hall Station Exit 10. On a weekday evening, catching up with a friend after about a year, the writer ordered the Huhuchwan mala hot pot and garlic stem fried rice, and with the spring rolls and dumplings from Huhugwan's review event, two women could not finish it all. With good food, a Chungking Express mood and a great playlist, Huhugwan is a City Hall Chinese restaurant made for long conversations.

Tonkatsu restaurant near Seoul Forest: cheese katsu dinner at Kosi

Kosi Seongsu Branch is a Japanese restaurant specializing in Sanuki udon and handmade tonkatsu near Seoul Forest and Ttukseom Station in Seongsu, Seoul. On a weekday evening the writer treated a friend to dinner at Kosi Seongsu Branch and shared the half-and-half katsu (banban katsu) and the kamatori den bukkake udon; portions were generous, and the cheese katsu with its oozing cheese was the standout. Kosi Seongsu Branch is a Seongsu tonkatsu spot worth coming back to for the cheese katsu and cold udon.

Isu Station gastropub with 10-a-day oven jokbal: Dosi Night

Dosi Night (도시나잇) is a Korean gastropub in Dongjak, Seoul, a three-minute walk from Isu Station Exit 13 in the heart of the food alley. Dosi Night's signature oven-baked jokbal (braised pork trotters, 32,000 won) is capped at 10 servings a day and takes about 30 minutes to cook, so booking ahead is essential, and it pairs cleanly with the marinated tomato and bocconcini (13,000 won). Free nachos and milk thistle round out a thoughtful spot for a group night out or a work dinner near Isu Station.

Sinnonhyeon study café for cover letter writing: Selecto Coffee

Selecto Coffee Sinnonhyeon Branch 24 Auto Brew Cafe is a 24-hour café two minutes on foot from Exit 1 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Seocho, Seoul. Sitting down to write a cover letter, the writer ordered an iced americano made with the geisha blend for 3,800 won and a ricotta cheese sandwich for 7,500 won, then worked at a solo desk with its own power outlet. Between the in-store print zone, the single-seat desks and unmanned overnight hours, Selecto Coffee Sinnonhyeon is built for laptop work and long study sessions.

Ramen after the Deoksugung night opening in Jung-gu, Seoul: Mentsuru

Mentsuru City Hall Branch is an authentic Japanese ramen restaurant a one-minute walk from Exit 10 of Seoul City Hall Station. Coming out of the Deoksugung Palace night opening, I ordered the basic shoyu ramen, hormone-don (a rice bowl of beef intestine) and fried gyoza, and charged a dead phone at the outlet built into the bar table while I ate. If you like beef intestine, the hormone-don at Mentsuru City Hall Branch is worth a trip on its own.
