I've suddenly been craving something spicy lately, so I went to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch 🌶️❤️ Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) is already one of my favorite foods, but I wanted the bubbling, cook-it-yourself instant kind rather than the packaged takeout version, so I decided to visit!

I found this place while searching for good tteokbokki in Yongsan, and it looked great both for a simple meal and for going all out with a friend 😊

What we ordered was 👉 instant tteokbokki for two + fried rice! Finishing tteokbokki with fried rice at the end is basically the national rule, right? 😆🍚 We ordered the instant tteokbokki knowing from the start we'd be having the fried rice too.

Fry flour at Hyeonseonine's self-serve bar

There's a self-serve bar in one corner of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, so you can grab whatever you need without waiting on staff 😊✨

Interestingly, there's fry flour at the self-serve bar. I figured it'd be delicious to dip tteokbokki in, so I grabbed some 👍

When you're eating tteokbokki, you often need an extra side plate or basic sides, and it was nice being able to grab them myself instead of constantly asking staff! It was great not having to feel awkward about taking as much as I needed 👍🏻 Instant tteokbokki especially comes with broth and lots of ingredients to share, so you often need side plates and tongs — having a self-serve bar made eating so much more convenient 🥰

There were so many takeout and delivery orders that the staff looked super busy ㅠㅠ But they were still kind!!

Instant tteokbokki for two, bubbling at the table

🌶️ After a short wait, the instant tteokbokki arrived 🔥 Served in a pot, it definitely feels different from regular tteokbokki!

Fish cake broth, fried mandu (dumplings), fried rice — ahh~~~ The fish cake broth was seasoned just right, perfect for settling the stomach, and two fried dumplings per person ???? Such a treat 💗

Since you cook it yourself right at the table, I loved how the sauce gradually soaked into the ingredients over time 😋 At first it felt a bit more like a broth, but as it boiled the sauce blended more and more into the rice cakes and other ingredients! Watching it bubble away made me impatient to eat, chopsticks in hand the whole time 😂

Tteokbokki really tastes best piping hot ❤️🔥 The rice cakes soaked up the sauce beautifully, and the sweet-spicy sauce kept pulling my chopsticks back in. One bite and I'd go 'mmm, so good!' then take another 😆💕 Unlike tteokbokki that's fully made from the start, instant tteokbokki is fun because the flavor changes a bit depending on how long you cook it. It's tasty with the broth at first, tasty again once it thickens up more with longer cooking, and tasty at the very end too, dipping ingredients in the last bit of sauce 🤭

Fried rice to finish: order it with the tteokbokki

The highlight of the day was the fried rice ❤️ You can't just leave all that leftover sauce behind after finishing the tteokbokki lol. Even though I was already pretty full, just hearing 'fried rice' made me feel like I could eat more 🤣 Rice fried in tteokbokki sauce can't possibly taste bad! Once the sauce mixes evenly into the rice, it takes on a whole different charm from the tteokbokki itself 🍚✨ Since we'd already eaten a good amount of tteokbokki, there was plenty of leftover sauce and flavorful bits in the pot, making it perfect for finishing with fried rice. That weird phenomenon where fried rice still goes in even when you're full…😂 I kept saying 'okay, really just one more spoonful' but kept eating lol. If you're going for instant tteokbokki, I'd personally recommend ordering the fried rice too 👍🏻💕

Verdict: tteokbokki for two plus fried rice is plenty for two people

After the meal, there was even a claw machine outside the shop for the perfect finishing touch!! Overall, it felt like I got to properly enjoy instant tteokbokki again after a while 😋 It hit the spot when I was craving something spicy, and starting with the instant tteokbokki for two and finishing with fried rice made for a pretty filling meal for two people! Most of all, instant tteokbokki has that fun of boiling it fresh right at the table, which gives it a different feel from regular tteokbokki 🔥 It's a place I'll remember for a simple meal with a friend in Yongsan, or for whenever I'm craving something spicy 😊 If you love tteokbokki, it's worth a visit at least once! I think I'll think of this place again next time I'm craving tteokbokki 😆❤️
