Jincheon, Daegu chicken & beer spot for a family birthday: Jangjakkun
In short
Jangjakkun Daegu Direct Branch is a wood-fired whole chicken restaurant in Jincheon-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, whose signature dish is herbal nurungji chicken (chicken with crispy scorched rice). For a brother-in-law's birthday, four family members ordered the herbal nurungji chicken, spicy sea snail salad with somyeon noodles, hangover ramen and rice balls with soju and beer, and the light, wood-smoked chicken and crunchy nurungji stood out most. With roomy seating on two floors, kiosk ordering and a self-service bar, Jangjakkun Daegu Direct Branch proved a satisfying choice for a birthday dinner or family gathering.

The restaurant provided some services, but this is an honest review written after eating there, and I paid more than 50% of the cost myself.
Why we chose Jangjakkun Daegu Direct Branch for a birthday dinner
For my brother-in-law's birthday, my sister-in-law and her husband and the two of us, four people in all, went out for dinner and a celebration at Jangjakkun Daegu Direct Branch (장작꾼 대구직영점), a chicken place in Jincheon-dong with a great word-of-mouth reputation. It's famous for its herbal nurungji chicken with a lovely wood-fire aroma.
It's well known as a roast chicken spot in Daegu and I'd been wanting to try it for ages. I was really looking forward to the herbal nurungji chicken with its subtle smoky scent and the variety of side dishes.

Atmosphere and seating on two floors
The blazing wood fire right at the entrance grabbed my attention immediately.

It was early evening when we went in, so it wasn't very crowded.

The tidy interior has both a first and second floor, and the tables are spaced generously, so it works well for family gatherings or company dinners too.

What we ordered at the kiosk

Ordering is done at a kiosk. Menu photos and descriptions are shown together, so it was easy to pick what we wanted, and adding extra orders was simple too.

Here's what the four of us ordered this time.
- Herbal nurungji chicken
- Spicy sea snail salad with somyeon (thin wheat noodles)
- Hangover ramen
- Rice balls
- Chamisul soju
- Cass beer

Once you order, the basic side dishes are set out.
How does the herbal nurungji chicken taste?

Here comes today's star, the herbal nurungji chicken.

The golden-roasted chicken gave off a subtle wood-fire aroma, and the meat was moist yet light. It wasn't too greasy, so it was easy to keep eating, and the nurungji (scorched rice) underneath was crunchy and nutty, a perfect match for the chicken. It more than lived up to its reputation as a top chicken spot in Jincheon-dong.
Spicy sea snail salad with somyeon noodles, a perfect side for chicken

To go with the chicken, we ordered the spicy sea snail salad (golbaengi-muchim) with somyeon noodles.

The chewy sea snails, sweet-and-sour sauce and springy noodles went together beautifully, and alternating it with the mild herbal nurungji chicken made it hard to stop eating.
Hangover ramen and rice balls to finish the chicken and beer

After chicken and beer, you can't skip a spicy hangover ramen.

The ramen had nicely firm noodles, and the refreshing broth settled my stomach,

and the rice balls we ordered with it were fun because you shape them however you like. They went well with the ramen broth and with the sea snail salad too.
Self-service bar and review event

On one side of the restaurant there's a self-service bar where you can freely grab small plates and basic side dishes. Being able to get more sides whenever we ran low made it even better.

After we finished eating, I noticed they also run a review event. It's easy to join: write a review after your visit and you get a service perk, so be sure to check if you go.

A beer toast for my brother-in-law's birthday
To make my brother-in-law's birthday extra special, we raised a toast with cold draft beer and celebrated him. Sitting around together with good food, laughing and chatting, was the happiest part. If you're looking for a roast chicken place in Daegu, this was a satisfying spot for a family gathering or birthday meal.

Jangjakkun Daegu Direct Branch: final verdict
I'd recommend Jangjakkun Daegu Direct Branch to anyone looking for great chicken in Jincheon-dong or a roast chicken place in Daegu.
The herbal nurungji chicken with its lingering wood-fire aroma was great, and the menu overall, with the sea snail salad, hangover ramen and rice balls, was good too. Kiosk ordering and the self-service bar were convenient, and the ongoing review event made it even more satisfying.

I recommend it as a Jincheon-dong chicken spot for family gatherings, birthday get-togethers, or a chicken and beer night with friends.
