Hagane Hanwoo Gomtang Uijeongbu Main Branch is a hanwoo gomtang (Korean beef bone soup) restaurant on the street across from Eulji University Hospital in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. A regular who picks up Naju gomtang two or three times a week for the kids' dinner finally dined in with her husband, ordering the ox head gomtang with seasoned beef tendon set (13,900 won) and the Naju gomtang with boiled beef tendon set (15,900 won), plus all the somyeon noodles and side dishes she wanted from the self-serve bar. Hagane Hanwoo Gomtang is a gomtang spot that this takeout regular, now a dine-in convert, recommends for its generous portions and friendly service.

Tonkatsu date near Gongneung Station: cold soba set, Jeongseong Katz

Jeongseong Katz Gongneung (정성카츠 공릉점) is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant near Exit 2 of Gongneung Station in Nowon, Seoul, close to the Gyeongchun Line Forest Path. On a Gongneung date, the writer ordered the Jeongseong mixed katsu and the cold soba plus katsu set; the pork was thick-cut and the portions were so generous they couldn't finish everything. Jeongseong Katz Gongneung is a good date meal before moving on to a café along the Gyeongchun Line Forest Path.

Nowon shabu-shabu restaurant, so full on a diet I skipped dinner: Hana

Hana Shabu Shabu Junggye Main Branch is a shabu-shabu and seiro-mushi (steamed dish) restaurant in the Junggye Brownstone building between Junggye Station and Hagye Station in Nowon, Seoul. The writer and a friend arrived right at opening time and ordered two brisket and sirloin shabu-shabu lunches at 23,000 won per person, got a free torched tataki for a Naver receipt review, and finished with udon. Even on a diet, the writer could not put down the chopsticks at Hana Shabu Shabu and was full enough to skip dinner.

Family Korean BBQ near Geobuk Island, Siheung: Daehwa Sutbul Garden

Daehwa Sutbul Garden Siheung Janggok Branch is a charcoal-grilled beef rib restaurant in an apartment shopping arcade in Janggok-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi. On a two-day holiday trip to Geobuk Island in Siheung, a family of four had dinner there: a 500g platter of Gyeongju-style beef ribs marinated to order and salt-grilled beef rib meat, plus the kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) served free with a meat order, 5,900-won yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and free ice cream. Daehwa Sutbul Garden is a good-value spot where families with kids staying on Geobuk Island can fill up on beef.

Uijeongbu naengmyeon and charcoal-grilled meat: Daedae Myeonok

Daedae Myeonok (대대면옥) is a naengmyeon (cold noodle) restaurant at the entrance to Gosan-dong in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, known for making its broth with Jinburyeong dried pollack. On a rainy day during school vacation, the writer and her teenage daughter arrived at Daedae Myeonok right at opening for lunch and ordered mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth), bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles) and a half plate of charcoal-grilled meat, and were happy with the free fish cake soup and lettuce-perilla salad as well. The cool noodles and smoky grilled meat kept them full until dinner, making Daedae Myeonok a Gosan-dong naengmyeon spot worth returning to.

Yangju Okjeong tonkatsu on a lizard-shopping day: Himawari skewer udon

Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch is a Japanese tonkatsu restaurant on the 1st floor of Dream Tower 2 in Okjeong-dong, Yangju. At lunch with her 8th-grade daughter, the writer ordered a skewer udon set in an earthen pot with half a loin katsu (13,000 won), hire katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet, 14,000 won) and a single cheese katsu (5,000 won). After a taste of her daughter's skewer udon, the writer, who had always ordered only hire katsu, finally understood why people order udon at a tonkatsu restaurant. Verdict: Himawari is a tonkatsu spot in Okjeong-dong that satisfied both adult and child.

Kalguksu spot in Millak 2-jigu, Uijeongbu, with baby chairs: Ingane

Ingane (인가네) is a newly opened kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and noodle restaurant in Millak 2-jigu, Uijeongbu. On a school-break lunch with her daughter, the writer ordered bone broth kalguksu, anchovy kalguksu and mung bean pancake, and was impressed by Ingane's Cesco-managed clean dining room, group room, baby high chairs, free rice and kimchi made fresh every morning. Ingane is a good pick for families who want a generous bowl of kalguksu in a spotless place.

Uijeongbu pork cutlet spot for a school-break lunch: Yangchonri

Yangchonri Donkaseu Millak Branch (양촌리돈가스 민락점) is an old-school, Western-style pork cutlet restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Jeil Punggyeongchae shopping complex in Millak-dong, Uijeongbu. On a late lunch with a child on school break, the writer ordered a cheese pork cutlet and a fire-grilled baby octopus rice bowl. The cheese comes melted on top rather than stuffed inside, so the cutlet portion stays generous, and the octopus is not spicy but has a great smoky flavor. With its big portions, Yangchonri Donkaseu Millak Branch is a filling lunch spot in Millak-dong for parents and kids.

Manpo Galbi is a great-value galbi spot well worth the drive from Uijeongbu.
