Gwangju hanok café for specialty hand-drip coffee: Hoyang Horim

In short

Hoyang Horim is a roastery café set in a restored hanok in Yangnim-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju. On a fourth annual visit, this time with her mother, the writer ordered plain gaeseongjuak (Gaeseong-style fried rice cake) at 2,800 won, a mugwort injeolmi waffle at 9,500 won, a decaf iced americano at 5,000 won and a hot specialty hand-drip coffee at 6,500 won, and found jar bingsu newly added to the menu. The lychee-and-peach acidity of the hand-drip coffee went well with the chewy gaeseongjuak, and staff packed the leftover drip coffee to go.

What kind of café is Hoyang Horim?

Hoyang Horim is a hanok café in Yangnim-dong, Gwangju, where you can enjoy the quiet hanok atmosphere along with house-roasted coffee and traditional desserts like gaeseongjuak and injeolmi waffle ☕️

Exterior of Hoyang Horim, built inside a preserved hanok

I've made a point of visiting this café once a year for the past four years Review start

Hoyang Horim's biggest feature, obvious from the outside, is that it's a café built inside a genuine, preserved hanok!

The hanok building seen from the entrance of Hoyang Horim

Since it had been a while since my last visit, a seasonal new menu item — jar bingsu — seemed to have appeared

Hanok setting and seating in Yangnim-dong

With its tiled roof, hanok structure, and courtyard, the space fits Yangnim-dong's particular quiet charm perfectly, and there are outdoor seats in the courtyard as well as indoor seating

The interior decor is also full of hanok vibes

Sunlight was streaming in outside too, and the atmosphere was genuinely lovely. Since it was 1–2 pm, eating outside felt like it'd be a bit much, so we took a seat inside haha

There was also a sketch corner, maybe for kids?

There was a spot to draw water, plus baby chairs and even blankets — all of which showed the owner's thoughtfulness

There's also a spot where they brew hand-drip coffee and extract it

Near the restroom there was even lighting, adding a soft touch to the atmosphere

Since this is a hand-drip place, there were about five hand-drip options, plus a decaf coffee available too

There was also gotgamsando (dried-persimmon-wrapped) and blueberry and cinnamon Basque cheesecakes

They also make and sell their own candied walnuts and candied pecans. You can order easily through the kiosk

It was plated so prettily that the moment it arrived, my mom and I both went 'wow' together hehe

How is the specialty hand-drip coffee?

This is the specialty hand-drip coffee! It had notes of lychee, peach, and herbs with some acidity. Unfortunately the no-acidity hand-drip option was sold out that day :( Hand-drip could be ordered iced or hot, and we went with hot

Iced americano ordered with the decaf option

This one is not hand-drip but a regular americano with the decaf option~ It wasn't particularly acidic

Mugwort injeolmi waffle

This is the injeolmi waffle! Topped with vanilla ice cream, sliced almonds, and a dusting of injeolmi powder

The waffle was basically rice cake through and through! They press it in the waffle iron so it's genuinely chewy inside with a crisp exterior. And they cut it into easy-to-eat pieces for you

It's so good eaten together with the ice cream

See, it's all sliced up like this!

Hot hand-drip coffee with a peach aroma

This is the hot hand-drip coffee. A gentle peach aroma rises up from it. Delicious!

A plate of chewy plain gaeseongjuak

Plain gaeseongjuak, the original flavour

This is the plain gaeseongjuak! I'd never had gaeseongjuak before so I was curious haha

Gaeseongjuak was so chewy it didn't cut easily

Truly thick and chewy! It wasn't just plainly sweet — there was a slight tang mixed in too

We had some hand-drip coffee left over, so I asked for it to go, and they packed it up for takeout right away haha
