I wanted a hearty meal for once, so I looked for a nice place near Jeongja Station. I wanted eel, but I didn't want to give up hanwoo (Korean beef) either. So I went to Mansuheon near Jeongja Station, where you can enjoy both. This time I had salt-grilled eel, two-plus grade hanwoo galbisal (short rib) grill, and a three-drink bokbunja (black raspberry wine) pairing. Let me introduce Mansuheon, my go-to eel dinner spot near Jeongja Station!

How was the salt-grilled eel?

I started with Mansuheon's salt-grilled eel. The seasoning wasn't strong, so I could really taste the eel's own nutty flavor. The surface was grilled golden brown with a slightly crisp texture. The inside was moist and tender, melting cleanly in my mouth. The eel had just the right amount of fat, so it tasted great with just salt. Eating it piece by piece, it wasn't as greasy as I expected, and I kept reaching for more.

Golden and crisp outside, moist and tender inside — I was glad I went with the salt-grilled version.

Two-plus grade hanwoo galbisal vs. eel: how do they differ?

Next I had the two-plus grade hanwoo galbisal (short rib) grill. As soon as it hit the pan, a rich meaty aroma rose up. Grilled just the right amount without overdoing it, the juices stayed in and the texture was tender. I could catch a bit of the galbisal's signature chewiness, giving it a different charm from the eel. If the eel felt clean and soft, the hanwoo galbisal was rich and savory. Alternating between the two made the flavor difference clear, which made the meal more fun.

Eating the hanwoo right after the eel made it fun to compare the two different flavors.

The three-drink bokbunja pairing

We paired the meal with a three-drink bokbunja (black raspberry wine) lineup. The bokbunja's sweet-tart flavor cut through the eel's richness nicely, and it also went well with the hanwoo galbisal, making it fun to alternate between food and drink.

Final verdict on Mansuheon Jeongja

What I liked most about Mansuheon Jeongja was being able to properly enjoy both eel and hanwoo in one sitting. The menu combination was great, from the clean salt-grilled eel to the rich two-plus grade hanwoo galbisal grill. Adding the three-drink bokbunja pairing made the meal feel a bit more special. If you're near Jeongja Station and want to enjoy eel and hanwoo together, or looking for a spot for a date or family meal, Mansuheon is worth checking out.
