Donghae Korean restaurant for sea-view dakbokkeumtang: Mukho Sotbokkeumtang

In short

Mukho Sotbokkeumtang is a chicken restaurant opposite Kkamakbawi Rock at Mukho Port in Donghae, Gangwon. We ate mild sotttukkeong dakbokkeumtang and fried rice upstairs with a sea view; even the mild level had a gentle heat, while the not-too-sweet sauce and crisp rice at the bottom stood out.

I visited Mukho Sotbokkeumtang (묵호솥볶음탕), where you can eat sotttukkeong dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken cooked on a pot lid) while looking out at the sea from Mukho Port. The two of us ate upstairs, then finished with fried rice in the remaining sauce.

Visit to Mukho Sotbokkeumtang by Mukho Port

Where is it, and was parking easy?

The restaurant is in the Kkamakbawi Hoemauel shopping complex beside Haerang Observatory at Mukho Port, opposite Kkamakbawi Rock. The sea was directly in front, and the parking lot was spacious. We could park here and walk to Haerang Observatory and Dokaebigol Sky Valley Observatory, which made it easy to plan around a meal while traveling.

Which seats have a sea view?

Both the first and second floors were operating when we visited. The beach was visible from the first floor too, but we went upstairs.

From the second floor, we had an open view of the East Sea and Kkamakbawi Rock straight ahead. The sea was visible even from tables farther inside, not only by the windows. The interior was clean and comfortable, and each table had a pot lid ready for cooking. Even the small portion for two is cooked on a pot lid.

What dishes and add-ins are available besides dakbokkeumtang?

Alongside dakbokkeumtang, there were chicken dishes including dakhanmari (whole chicken hot pot), chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), chicken gomtang (chicken soup), and chogye naengmyeon (cold chicken noodle soup).

We ordered at the table kiosk. Add-ins for the pot-lid dishes included octopus, udon, dangmyeon (glass noodles), rice cakes, and fish-cake skewers. We wanted to add several things, but held back because it was a meal for two.

We could get more of the basic side dishes at the self-service bar if needed. The side dishes were generally clean-tasting, and I especially liked the refreshing baekkimchi (white kimchi).

How spicy is the mildest level, and how long does it take?

The dakbokkeumtang arrived generously piled onto the pot lid. Since we could choose the spice level, we ordered the mildest one. Even for me, someone who does not handle spicy food well, it was manageable, though the mild level still had a clean, gentle heat. The second level is said to be about as spicy as Shin Ramyun.

The dakbokkeumtang included wheat-flour rice cakes, potatoes, mushrooms, and scallions. We watched it simmer while looking out at the sea.

Because it was cooked after ordering, it took about 10 minutes for the chicken to cook during our visit. While waiting, we ate the cooked vegetables and the chewy, tender rice cakes first.

What were the chicken and sauce like?

The chicken was tender and came easily off the bone, with the savory-spicy sauce deeply absorbed. The sauce was not overly sweet, and its heat gradually came through. As it continued simmering on the pot lid, the broth reduced to a shallow amount and the potatoes absorbed the seasoning well.

I liked lightly crushing the potatoes and eating them with the broth. The chicken also went well with the accompanying chives and seasoned onions.

How was the finishing fried rice?

We were full after the dakbokkeumtang, but the sauce was so good that we also had fried rice. We finished by stir-frying rice in the small amount of sauce left behind.

The dakbokkeumtang sauce coated every grain of rice, making it deeply savory, nutty, and spicy. The rice that stuck to the pot lid was lightly crisp, which added a nice texture.

It was also good to lightly dip the fried rice in the remaining dakbokkeumtang broth they served separately. The sea-view dakbokkeumtang was enjoyable, but finishing with the crisp fried rice made the meal feel complete.

What are the opening hours and closing days?
