Busan sashimi course with shabu-shabu and monkfish stew: Ppong Sashimi
In short
Ppong Sashimi (뽕사시미) is a sashimi restaurant in Jung-gu, Busan, between Jungang-dong Station and Nampo-dong, about an 11-minute walk from Busan Station. Walking straight from Busan Station, the writer ordered the assorted sashimi B course for two at Ppong Sashimi, and the dishes kept coming: tuna sashimi, tuna tartare and thick-cut assorted sashimi, then hot shabu-shabu and a spicy monkfish stew (agu jiri-tang) on a day that had suddenly turned cold. With private-room style seating and baby chairs, Ppong Sashimi is a good Nampo-dong course-meal restaurant for taking your parents.

How far is Ppong Sashimi from Busan Station?
Ppong Sashimi (뽕사시미) is about an 11-minute walk from Busan Station, so I walked over as soon as I got off the train. It felt like forever since I'd come down to Busan! I was looking for a place to eat near the station and found this sashimi restaurant between Jungang-dong Station and Nampo-dong.
I also wanted to see Bukkang-i (the Busan mascot), but it was evening, haha... If you go see Bukkang-i and want to take your parents for Japanese food afterwards, I recommend Ppong Sashimi.

Is Ppong Sashimi a good place to take your parents?
The interior is set up like private rooms, so it works well for a parent's birthday. There's a restroom inside the restaurant too, which makes having a drink easy!

They have baby chairs too!

Do you need to reserve the assorted sashimi B course at Ppong Sashimi?
What I ordered at Ppong Sashimi was the assorted sashimi B course for two. I'd recommend reserving ahead, because if you do, the basic table setting is already laid out for you. It's good for anniversaries, and for birthdays of your parents or in-laws.

Side dishes
The basic spread includes dried octopus, garlic scape pickles, cold sliced pork (naengjeyuk), sushi, sea cucumber, sea squirt, marinated shrimp, squid, egg and cucumber, and salad! And here's why I picked the B course:

Why choose the B course: tuna sashimi and tuna tartare
The B course comes with both tuna sashimi and tuna tartare 🥹 Amazing, right? No need to agonize over tuna sashimi versus assorted sashimi.
The tuna tartare is tuna tossed with pear in a yukhoe (Korean raw beef) sauce, so even people trying tuna for the first time can eat it without any trouble.

The cold sliced pork was so good thanks to the onions and the sauce!

The seared salmon sushi was incredible! If you go to Ppong Sashimi for the course or order sushi separately, definitely try the salmon.

Everything on the assorted seafood plate was good, bite after bite. It could work as drinking snacks all on its own.

What does the assorted sashimi at Ppong Sashimi look like, and how thick is it?
The assorted sashimi is a combination of red seabream, flounder and salmon! It also came with seabream wrapped in seaweed (masukawa-style), which I loved.
Can you see how thick the slices are? Every piece is chunky, and I liked that there are lots of pieces too.

Fins with oil dip, sashimi with garlic scapes
Try dipping the fins in the oil dip that comes with the tuna sashimi. Pure heaven! And I tried the sashimi with garlic scapes, the combo they recommended, and oh, there's a reason it's called a great combo. The salmon, flounder and seabream were all fresh and delicious.

Abalone porridge and seaweed soup come out too, and I'd heard the seaweed soup is famous? I totally get it now.. The abalone porridge is good too! After the abalone porridge and seaweed soup, assorted seafood, sushi and assorted sashimi, the main meal comes out!
B course main meal: grilled seabream head and shabu-shabu

The main meal of the B course brings grilled seabream head and shabu-shabu, and

it's closer to sukiyaki, so I wanted to mix rice into it haha. It has ginkgo nuts and meat in it, and the weather suddenly turned cold today, right? So the broth, vegetables and meat were all piping hot and so good.

Kataifi shrimp tempura and abalone and cheese scallops
Kataifi (shredded pastry) on the fried shrimp?! It's crunchy and even tastier, the shrimp is packed full, and I thought it was neat that curry powder comes alongside.

And that's not all: abalone, shrimp and cheese scallops too! I didn't know a course menu could be this solid.

Even better because it was warm 🫶 If you go to Ppong Sashimi, the sashimi restaurant by Jungang-dong Station near Nampo-dong in Busan, I recommend the assorted sashimi B course!

Second meal: monkfish stew and flying fish roe rice to finish
For the B course's second meal(?), a jjigae-style clear stew (jiri-tang) and roe rice (albap) come out. It really keeps coming, so I was so full, but

the monkfish in the monkfish stew is springy, big and meaty, so how could I not eat it? The broth is clean and spicy, a perfect snack for soju.

I mixed the roe rice well and ate it with the grilled seabream head for a perfect finish. Ppong Sashimi is a Nampo-dong course-meal spot in Busan that's great to visit with your parents.
