Gimpo Gurae-dong castella to go for breakfast, keeps 6 days: Jinsim

On mornings when I can't be bothered to make a proper breakfast, I end up grabbing bread or coffee instead. This time I stopped by Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae Main Branch in Gurae-dong, Gimpo to pick up some castella cake. Since it's a castella specialty shop, there's a pretty wide range of flavors beyond the basic — chocolate, mocha, mugwort, whipped cream — so there's plenty to choose from depending on your taste.

Where is Jinsim Castella in Gurae-dong, and where do you park?

Jinsim Castella Gurae Branch is on the 1st floor of the building at 525 Gimpohangang 4-ro in Gurae-dong, Gimpo, and it's open 10:00–21:00. Jinsim Castella and Chocolate Castella start at ₩8,700, and the Jinsim Americano starts at ₩2,500.

The shop is on the 1st floor so it's easy to spot — the red lettering reading 'Jinsim Castella' catches your eye right away, so you really can't miss it!

For parking, the building has spaces available — just mention it and they'll give you 1 hour. This is actually my third visit here and it's one of my go-to spots — it's simple to grab and the soft, signature castella texture is so good that I always stop by whenever I'm in Gimpo to pick some up.

You can't eat in the store — it's takeout only :)

Jinsim original and chocolate castella: the menu and prices

This time I picked two: Jinsim Castella and Chocolate Castella! I went in expecting just a plain basic castella, but the menu turned out to have way more variety than I thought.

Besides Jinsim Castella, there's whipped cream castella, chocolate castella, chocolate whipped cream castella, mocha, mugwort, and more — and you can add whipped cream separately too. There are also castella-and-drink sets, great for when you want something simple. If you're someone like me who always needs coffee in the morning, I'd definitely recommend pairing it with a slice of castella! Buying the castella and whipped cream separately and dipping the cake in like a sauce is also delicious.

How to eat it best and why it keeps 6 days in the fridge

To enjoy Jinsim Castella at its best: if you want it warm, microwave it for 30 seconds, or eat it with Greek yogurt and fruit. It's also good frozen and then thawed in the microwave, or eaten cold straight from the fridge. Personally, I think it tastes best after being refrigerated. Just keep in mind the fridge storage period is 6 days.

Chocolate castella as a kids' snack

The chocolate castella isn't a whipped-cream product — it's the chocolate castella itself topped with chocolate chips, which made it easy to feed to my kid as a snack. I cut off a piece and gave it to her, and she loved it, which made me weirdly proud. Buying one box of castella and splitting it — plain for the adults, chocolate for the kid — turned out to be a great combo for the whole family to share.

Castella with coffee as a breakfast substitute

I brought it home and brewed a cup of coffee to have with it, and they went together better than I expected. The castella itself isn't too heavy, has a soft, fluffy feel, and pairs well with coffee, making it a decent breakfast substitute. On mornings when cooking rice or soup feels like too much, just one piece of castella and a cup of coffee can actually be pretty satisfying. I especially like the plain flavor, so the original's light, savory taste appealed to me more than the other flavors.

I think it's a great menu for breakfast — light without being over the top. The chocolate castella was perfect as a kids' snack.

This time I picked these two, and I was pretty satisfied being able to handle both a kid's snack and an adult breakfast in one go. If you're in Gurae-dong, Gimpo looking for a snack to share with your kid or bread to take home, and you like castella, it's worth a stop. It's the kind of bakery I want to pick up from again next time I'm in Gimpo :)
