Daegu raw beef restaurant for a first-timer friend: Bonghwa Saenggogi
In short
Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch is a saenggogi (fresh raw beef) and mungtigi restaurant at the entrance of the Bokhyeon-ogeori food alley in Buk-gu, Daegu. On a weekday evening, the writer brought a friend who had never eaten raw beef and ordered the 2-person A course (140g raw beef + 140g yukhoe), and the friend happily ate the same-day-slaughtered hanu cow raw beef and even the side dishes like deunggol (beef spinal cord). Bonghwa Saenggogi's half raw beef, half yukhoe set is a good fit for raw beef beginners.

Where is Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch, and is there parking?
Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch is a raw beef restaurant you can spot right from the entrance of the Bokhyeon-ogeori food alley in Buk-gu, Daegu. I booked a table for a friend who had never tried raw beef!!! No wandering around the food alley looking for it, because it's right there at the entrance.

In we went, heart pounding! 🅿️ There's room for about 2 cars in front of the shop, but if it's full, try the nearby side streets. We were there to drink, so we left the car and skipped off on foot.

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch hours and days off
Hours are Mon–Sat 17:00 to 01:00 (last order 00:00), closed every Sunday. Upcoming closures get updated, so it's a good idea to check Naver beforehand! (As of writing, it said closed on 8/15, Liberation Day, and 8/17, the substitute holiday for Liberation Day!)

Such a homey, familiar feel inside~ I shot around the other customers, but even on a weekday evening there were group diners, and a few tables filled with pairs like us!

What should you order when going with a raw beef first-timer?
With a raw beef beginner, the 2-person A course, half raw beef and half yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), worked well at Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch. We ordered the A course of 140g raw beef + 140g yukhoe, the most popular 2-person course! My friend had never had raw beef and I was worried, but she said she likes yukhoe in case she couldn't eat the raw beef, so one half-and-half plate was just right for us!

Bonghwa Saenggogi side dishes: what does the beef marrow taste like?
As soon as you order, side dishes come out one after another at Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch, and on this day marrow was among them. A whole range of sides arrived in a stream, and apart from the raw beef, every side dish was delicious too!

Especially the marrow (deungol), which I was trying for the first time too, melted in my mouth like pudding, I'm tearing up! Dipped in the salt sauce served with it, it was heavenly! (I wasn't familiar with marrow, so I asked the owner, who explained it kindly. I could feel his kindness from the moment I made the reservation, which I loved.)

Same-day-slaughtered hanu cow raw beef + yukhoe A course
Ta-da!! Today's main dish! The raw beef + yukhoe has arrived!

They said the beef is fresh Korean beef (hanu) from a cow slaughtered that day, sliced along the grain!! The raw beef was so pretty I almost couldn't bring myself to eat it. My friend said something like this has to be photographed and hurriedly took her first-ever raw beef photo, haha

I was drunk on the raw beef when they brought tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), beef radish soup and jeon (Korean pancakes) too! The table was so full it wouldn't fit in a single camera shot, so we ate very well!

Bonghwa Saenggogi's dipping sauce has chunky garlic
Put some sauce on a piece of raw beef and it's chewy, with the flavor of Korean beef spreading all through your mouth..! Both the yukhoe sauce and the raw beef sauce at Bonghwa Saenggogi come with chunky garlic rather than fully minced, so the texture was even better!

Even my friend who'd never had raw beef ate it very well at Bonghwa Saenggogi! I'd love to bring my husband, who really loves raw beef..! There are dividers between the tables, so it was also great for chatting quietly over a drink!

Bonghwa Saenggogi's self-service corner: unlimited fried eggs
At the self-service corner of Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch, you can have unlimited fried eggs. We were so busy talking that we missed this corner, but boss, unlimited fried eggs?!!! In these days of high prices! Egg prices have gone up so much too, sob..hahaha What a generous perk!

Should you reserve at Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch?
Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch sells meat slaughtered that day, so ingredients can run out; I recommend reserving if you can. Next time I want to try the briquette-grilled yeontan odeureogi (briquette-grilled beef)!

We cleared the plate of raw beef + yukhoe and all the side dishes, and still felt light, not bloated, which made the day even better! Bonghwa Saenggogi is great for a meal out or a company dinner, for a light drinking snack after dinner, and for a quiet chat as a second round after drinks!
