Jinju naengmyeon restaurant with vinegar-free broth: Songgiwon

In short

Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store is a Jinju naengmyeon restaurant on Cheonsu-ro in Jinju, Gyeongnam, carrying on a local Jinju naengmyeon brand that dates back to 1992. On a holiday weekday at 1:40 p.m., the writer came with their parents and ordered the Sunjo 1800 water naengmyeon, an extra-large mixed naengmyeon and a side of ujeon, while the galbitang was already sold out. The broth tasted best with nothing added at all, making Songgiwon worth a try for anyone who has been disappointed by Jinju naengmyeon before.

Whenever you visit Jinju, Gyeongnam, you absolutely have to eat Jinju naengmyeon (cold noodles). I had a regular spot I always went to, but it seemed like the taste had changed, so I decided to scout out a new Jinju naengmyeon place. Today I'm posting my review of Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store (송기원진주냉면), a local favorite among Jinju residents.

How long is the wait at 1:40 p.m. on a holiday?

It's the holiday period but still a weekday, and even though I arrived around 1:40pm — after the lunch rush — there was still a wait, which tells you how popular this Jinju naengmyeon restaurant is.

Customers waiting outside the restaurant on a holiday weekday afternoon

The restaurant's own parking lot is spacious and there's a dedicated parking attendant, so there's zero parking stress — that's probably why so many families come here to eat. I went with my parents too, and while waiting I noticed a lot of parents and families around, probably because of the holiday. It's a naengmyeon place, so even with a wait, the turnover is fast!

Inside Songgiwon: seating and atmosphere

Ceramic ware and decor displayed inside the restaurant

There's ceramic ware and artwork displayed throughout the restaurant with a distinctly Korean feel, and the space is clean and upscale, which somehow made the meal taste even better. Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store was still packed even at 2pm!

What are the signature dishes at Songgiwon?

Jinju naengmyeon is characterized by a seafood-based broth, the thicker noodle strands typical of Jinju-style naengmyeon, and a yukjeon (pan-fried beef) topping. Songgiwon has been making Jinju naengmyeon since 1992, carrying on the tradition as one of Jinju's local heritage restaurants.

Menu board including the galbitang dish

The signature dish is the Sunjo 1800 Jinju water naengmyeon! And the Songgiwon 1997 mixed naengmyeon, made with their special blended sauce! There's also galbitang (short rib soup) with big rib bones in it, which I'd recommend if you want warm broth or you're visiting with kids! We arrived late though, so they were out of rice and couldn't take our order for it 🥲

Ujeon, the beef yukjeon side worth adding

Even though Jinju naengmyeon already comes topped with plenty of this yukjeon, ordering it warm as a separate side dish is a whole different treat! Since it's made with beef, the menu lists it as "ujeon." Naengmyeon alone can feel a bit plain, so I'd recommend ordering this as a side the way you'd add mandu (dumplings) — it's savory and light, a flavor that everyone, young or old, will love!!

How to eat Jinju naengmyeon: skip the vinegar

Jinju water naengmyeon topped with fine ice flakes

The water naengmyeon arrived with fine ice flakes floating on top. Songgiwon's Jinju naengmyeon broth is light and full of umami, so I'd recommend tasting it plain first, with nothing added. It's a bit more subdued than Hamhung-style naengmyeon but saltier than Pyongyang-style, and the moment you sip the broth you'll go "so THIS is what clean, delicious naengmyeon broth tastes like!!" It was so good my eyes went wide the second I tasted it, haha.

Naengmyeon broth enjoyed together with family

My family, who ate with me, all agreed this place's naengmyeon was delicious — unanimous praise! I preferred the water naengmyeon, while my husband said the mixed naengmyeon was better, haha.

Jinju naengmyeon topped with yukjeon and pear slices

Jinju naengmyeon is even more savory and delicious with this yukjeon topping on it. The noodles alone might feel plain, but with cool pear and savory yukjeon piled on top, it's filling and fun to eat. It really felt like I hadn't had this good Jinju naengmyeon in a long time — I think I savored every single bite, exclaiming the whole way through, until the bowl was empty.

Tips for enjoying Jinju water naengmyeon deliciously!!!

  • First, enjoy the naengmyeon with the plain broth, no mustard or vinegar added.
  • Then add a little of the vinegar on the side to adjust the sourness to your taste.

Personally, I liked it best in its pure, unadulterated state. It was good enough that I want to go back to Jinju just to eat this again — highly recommend the water naengmyeon!

Extra-large mixed naengmyeon, the broth-and-sauce bowl

If you're torn between spicy bibim naengmyeon and water naengmyeon!!! I highly recommend the mixed naengmyeon — cold noodle broth topped generously with their special sauce 🫶

Mixed naengmyeon topped with the restaurant's special sauce

It's a bit more intense than the water naengmyeon, but it's not spicy or salty. Overall the seasoning is well-balanced and clean-tasting, so even my elementary-school-age son ate it happily. Note that the photo shows the extra-large portion — I'd recommend guys order the extra-large size. If you're a big eater and order the regular, you might end up still hungry, haha.

It's the extra-large size so the portion is really generous, right?? It looks spicy but isn't spicy at all — think of it less as a spice-forward naengmyeon and more as an upscale water-bibim naengmyeon whose flavor comes from good ingredients. It's on a completely different level from delivery-place or barbecue-restaurant naengmyeon. It's genuinely delicious.

This is Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store, a Jinju restaurant I visited with my parents over the holidays. If you've ever been disappointed by Jinju naengmyeon, give this place a try. Whether you have a plain palate or a picky one, everyone gave this Jinju naengmyeon place a thumbs up — a genuine recommendation!
