Spice-shy cloudy-day dumpling hot pot, Jongno 3-ga: Jongga Mandu

Jongga Mandu (종가만두) is a long-running dumpling hot pot restaurant near Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul that built its word-of-mouth reputation back when it was called Seonggyeong Mandu Specialty Restaurant. On a cloudy day, the writer ordered Jongga Mandu's half-and-half dumpling hot pot, eating the clean white broth and the spicy red broth side by side, and finished with kalguksu (knife-cut noodles). Jongga Mandu serves honest, clean-tasting handmade dumplings and is an easy pick when you're eating with someone who can't handle spice.

Suwon City Hall soup restaurant first loved in Jeju: Jeju Eunhuine

Jeju Eunhuine Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch is a Jeju-style haejangguk (hangover soup) franchise restaurant in the Ingye-dong nightlife block near Suwon City Hall. The writer first tasted Jeju Eunhuine's haejangguk on a Jeju trip and had sought out its Seoul branches. At the Suwon branch, the writer ordered haejangguk and a small dombe pork (Jeju-style boiled sliced pork) to eat as lettuce wraps, and was pleased with the spicy yet clean broth, generous fillings and unlimited rice refills. For a hangover cure or a filling lunch near Suwon City Hall, Jeju Eunhuine is a safe choice.

Munhyeon-dong shabu-shabu, 70g beef kalguksu, egg porridge: Yunujae

Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu (윤우재 문현샤브 칼국수) is a shabu-shabu and handmade kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant in Daerim Munhyeon City Plaza, Munhyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan. After many repeat visits, the writer orders the medium-spicy broth with extra minari, mushrooms and beef, saves some beef to make a beef kalguksu, and finishes with egg porridge. Verdict: with good value for the price and a spacious dining room, Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu is the Munhyeon-dong shabu-shabu spot the writer returns to whenever the craving hits.

Gwangalli second-date bar: salmon sushi, house sauces, Salmon Brothers

Salmon Brothers is a salmon-focused bar and restaurant on Gwangan-ro in Gwangalli, Suyeong, Busan. Two of us paired the signature raw salmon sushi with several house-made sauces, then added pasta noodles to the steamed clams in sake broth for a vongole-style finish. With soft lighting and well-spaced tables, Salmon Brothers is worth saving as a Gwangalli date spot or a second date after a blind date.

Busan milmyeon restaurant a regular returns to: Seomyeon Milmyeon

Seomyeon Milmyeon (서면밀면) is a milmyeon (Busan-style wheat noodle) restaurant at EOS Plaza near Seomyeon Station in Busanjin, Busan, with its own parking lot despite the busy downtown location. A regular who visits on every trip to Busan shared mul milmyeon (cold noodles in icy broth), bibim milmyeon (noodles in spicy sauce) and mandu (dumplings), and found the slushy broth, chewy noodles that never went soggy and a bibim sauce mild enough for people who avoid spicy food as good as ever. For access, taste and price together, Seomyeon Milmyeon is the first milmyeon restaurant the writer would recommend in Seomyeon.

Solo hangover soup in Ingye-dong, Suwon: special bowl's bone mountain

Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch is a pork bone soup (ppyeo haejangguk) restaurant near the bar alley in Ingye-dong, Suwon. Returning for the well-cooked meat remembered from an earlier visit, the writer ordered the special bone soup (teuk-ppyeo haejangguk) and found so much meat that picking it off the bones was filling on its own, leaving a 'bone mountain' piled on the plate. The siraegi (dried radish greens) was cooked soft rather than chewy and suited the spicy broth, making Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk a solid pick for a proper solo hangover meal in Ingye-dong.
