Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch is at the Dongchimsan intersection in Chimsan-dong, across from the Kolon Haneulchae entrance. The first floor below the restaurant is a piloti structure, so there's a big parking lot and parking is easy 🚘

The moment I walked into Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch, I saw all sorts of plaques and awards, plus staff trimming the meat right there. They prep it live in front of customers, so no need to even ask about freshness, right? 😁

It has a wood-tone interior, wide spacing between tables, partitions between them, and plenty of group seating too, so it looked perfect for a meal out :)

After you order and wait a bit, the banchan get laid out first, and my jaw dropped at a spread that could rival a traditional hanjeongsik (full-course Korean meal)! Just looking at the banchan, it was easy to see why this place has a reputation as a great beef spot in Chimsan-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu 🫢

The dishes filling the table were all neat and clearly made with care, and my chopsticks got busy before the main beef even arrived haha. They didn't just pad the number of dishes: the seasoning is right on, and every single one is delicious 🫶🏻🫶🏻 (especially the marinated crab 🦀)

Moist, fresh, top-grade beef comes neatly plated on a wooden board, and the glistening color, full of juices, really got my mouth watering haha

Skirt steak: rich beefy flavor and a satisfying chew

The skirt steak (anchangsal) at Gogi 9dan is a cut where you can fully enjoy that distinctive beefy aroma. The grain is alive, so the chew is firm yet springy, and strangely it's not tough at all, with rich juices bursting through your mouth 🤤

With moderate, not overdone marbling, the heavy, nutty flavor of the beef itself comes through even deeper ❤️ If you care more about juiciness and chew than about ordinary cuts, I recommend the skirt steak.

Flower rib: soft and tender

The flower rib (kkotgalbisal) at Gogi 9dan boasts marbling like snowflakes in full bloom ❄️ I seared it lightly on both sides over charcoal and took a bite, and the leanness of the meat and the richness of the fat blended together beautifully~

The soft marbled fat melts and, together with plenty of juice, that savory depth..😋 It's the king of tender textures, going down smoothly with barely any chewing, so I think there's no better cut if you're eating with elders or kids!

Maybe because it's a beef restaurant's yukhoe, the hanwoo yukhoe in the 9dan Set is on another level of freshness. It has a chewy texture and is tossed in a savory, slightly sweet seasoning, so it's great as a drinking snack. You can also put it on the sushi rice with fresh wasabi to make yukhoe sushi 🍣

Jjolmyeon (chewy spicy noodles) wrapped with grilled beef

The jjolmyeon in the 9dan Set whets your appetite with bouncy noodles, crunchy vegetables and a spicy-tangy sauce. Mix the noodles well, wrap them with a piece of well-cooked beef, and yum, a beef-wrap jjolmyeon 😋

Pork kimchi stew, and an extra bowl of rice

Last up is the hot, spicy pork kimchi stew 🍲 You'd never believe it's a side dish, it's loaded with vegetables and pork, wow.

You can boil it right at the table, and the broth doesn't have a strong MSG taste; it's rich yet spicy, and it wipes your greasy mouth totally clean. I couldn't help ordering rice, so in the end I polished off a whole bowl haha

When you finish your meal and head out of Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch, there's a variety of after-meal drinks to pick from, from plum tea that's good for digestion to cold iced coffee and sweet vending-machine coffee ☕
