Why we returned to Bueokgan Sangmu with our baby

Hi, this is Mochi Mom! If you've been looking for a good-atmosphere Western restaurant in Gwangju, you've probably heard of Bueokgan Sangmu Branch.

This actually isn't my first time here — it's a revisit. I had such a good memory from before that I went back again, this time with my baby.

Eating out with a baby means I always check things carefully now — is parking convenient, is there a baby chair, is there baby tableware. This place was great on atmosphere and also comfortable for a family visit, so I liked it even more.

What kind of restaurant is Bueokgan Sangmu Branch?

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a European-style restaurant located in the Sangmu district!

It's designed around the concept of a vintage classic Italian hotel, and once you actually step inside, the atmosphere is clearly different from a typical pasta place.

They say the space was inspired by the ballroom in Titanic — vintage furniture and props are placed all over, giving you the feeling of walking into some old European hotel. Honestly, I think I keep coming back as much for the space itself as for the food.

Even though this was my second visit, my mood lifted the moment I walked in!!!! Plenty of places are pretty in photos but uncomfortable once you're actually sitting down, but Bueokgan has a spacious layout with generous table spacing, so the meal itself felt comfortable too!!

What is the atmosphere like inside Bueokgan Sangmu?

If I had to pick the biggest draw of Bueokgan Sangmu Branch, I'd say it's the interior design!!

It really feels like genuine European style, so it's less like coming for a meal and more like briefly traveling to another place. Vintage furniture and classic props are scattered around, and with the lighting adding to it all, just sitting there puts you in a good mood. I especially felt like the space has this power of making you feel like an honored guest being treated well.

So it suits dates or anniversaries where atmosphere matters, and it would also work fine for family meals or wedding-invitation gatherings.

Where do you park at Bueokgan Sangmu?

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch has a spacious dedicated parking lot right behind the store, so I could visit with zero parking stress. When eating out with a baby, easy parking is really the most important thing.

Circling around trying to find parking with a baby in tow is exhausting, but here you can just park right behind the store and walk in, which was genuinely convenient. If you've been hesitating over a family meal or brunch spot in Sangmu because of parking, this is a pretty big advantage.

Is Bueokgan Sangmu good to visit with a baby?

This time I visited with my baby, and the staff seated us on a sofa. They also brought a baby chair right away and checked whether we needed baby tableware, which made eating with the baby much easier.

When you eat out with a baby, places without a baby chair or tableware mean you're scrambling before the meal even starts. Here, everything needed was already ready, which was clearly convenient. So even though it's a restaurant with a nice atmosphere, I'd say it also works fine as a family dining spot with a child.

What comes in Couple Set A and how much is it?

This time I ordered Couple Set A. ✔️ Soup + pasta + rice + 2 drinks, for ₩48,000.

We chose pumpkin soup, rosé pasta for the pasta, and abalone cream risotto for the rice. For drinks, one iced americano and one lemonade! With pasta, risotto, soup and two drinks all included, the price felt much better than I expected. For two people, ordering as a set was fuller and better value than ordering separate items.

Sweet pumpkin soup

First out was the pumpkin soup. It's soft with a gently sweet pumpkin flavor, a nice way to start the meal.

It's not aggressively sweet, more soft and comforting, so it seemed fine to share even with the baby. Bueokgan also has a pastry soup among its signature menu items — I'd like to try that one next time!

Abalone cream risotto

And the one I was most looking forward to that day — the abalone cream risotto.

It's well known as a popular menu item at Bueokgan, and a lot of actual reviews praise how soft and savory it is. Eating it in person, the cream sauce doesn't feel heavy at all — the soft, savory flavor comes through first.

The abalone has a chewy bite that pairs well with the creamy risotto texture, and its natural umami adds depth to the cream sauce, giving it more flavor than an ordinary cream risotto. If you like cream risotto, this is a flavor that's hard not to love!! The rice grains aren't overly soft either — they have just the right texture, so scooping it up with the sauce goes down smoothly. It really deserves to be a signature dish here.

Rosé pasta

For the pasta, I ordered rosé pasta!!

The rosé sauce mixes the tang of tomato with the softness of cream in just the right balance, so it wasn't too heavy to eat. The slight tomato acidity, compared to a pure cream pasta, cuts through the richness, and the sauce clings well to the noodles, giving a well-balanced flavor with each bite.

If the abalone cream risotto leans savory and soft, the rosé pasta is a bit fresher and more umami-forward, so ordering both together didn't feel repetitive at all.

It's great for pasta lovers, and also a good pick for anyone who finds cream pasta too heavy.

The pastry pie from the receipt review event

After finishing the meal, I also took part in the receipt review event. The item I received for the review was a pastry pie. I'd had it last time too and it was so good that I joined again!!!!

The crisp, flaky pastry paired nicely with the sweetness, making it a good dessert to end the meal. Bueokgan's pastry soup, another of its signature items, is also well known — next time I want to try that properly with the pastry. The review-event item wasn't slapdash at all, so I was very satisfied — enjoying it with a drink was pure bliss!!

How does Bueokgan Sangmu work as a brunch spot in Sangmu?

Bueokgan is a good place to use for lunch, brunch, and dates alike. Since it sits a little away from the busy Sangmu commercial street, it doesn't feel too crowded or hectic, and it was nice to eat at a relaxed pace.

Beyond pasta and risotto, the menu also includes pizza, soup, pilaf and more, so it's easy for a group to order to their own tastes. Ordering the couple set like this time lets you enjoy soup, pasta, rice and drinks all at once, which makes it a solid option when looking for a brunch or lunch spot in Sangmu.

Final thoughts on Bueokgan Sangmu Branch

This second visit to Bueokgan Sangmu Branch, this time with my baby. I remembered the pretty space from my first visit, and this time I liked it even more for how convenient it was as a family meal with a child — parking, baby chair, and baby tableware all covered.

Of everything we ate that day, the abalone cream risotto was my favorite in particular, and the rosé pasta was also delicious, with the cream's softness and the tomato's freshness balancing nicely. I also liked that Couple Set A, including soup, pasta, rice and two drinks, came to ₩48,000.

Most of all, this isn't a place where you just eat and leave right away — the time spent dining at a leisurely pace in a beautiful space was enjoyable in itself. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good-atmosphere date spot in Sangmu, anyone in Gwangju looking for a pretty restaurant or brunch place, and anyone looking for somewhere comfortable to eat with a baby!!
