Gwangju eel restaurant 11am wait, 716g for two: Deokeun Jangeo

This Chuseok holiday, I went hunting for restaurants that stay open where the whole family can gather for real hearty, restorative food — and I found this Gwangju favorite! A Gwangju eel restaurant! (Honestly I meant to bring the family, but I came with a friend first to taste-test, haha. It totally passed, so I'm definitely bringing the family back.) This is Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch in Bonchon-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju! It's in Yangsan-dong, Gwangju's restaurant district, and the parking lot is massive, which made it even better!! Great parking, great view, great eel, great veggies — honestly just great everything, haha. Plus, they serve high-quality, domestically raised, antibiotic-free freshwater eel from Muan, Jeollanam-do, at insanely good value, so I went in with high expectations, haha. The meat was so plump and had amazing chew, and the restaurant was huge and comfortable, so there were tons of family customers, from elderly folks to little kids. Does Deokeun Jangeo really have parking for 80 cars?

Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch is on the first floor of a newly built building on Haseo-ro 596 in Buk-gu, Gwangju, right next to Honam Region Rehabilitation Hospital. There's a free in-building parking lot that can hold up to 80 cars at once.

They really do have parking for up to 80 cars at once! Even if the whole family shows up in multiple cars, zero parking worries, haha.

Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch stays open the entire holiday without closing! For Chuseok and holiday family meals out, so many places close. And when you finally find one that's open, it's often cramped with no parking or a tiny lot — but Deokeun Jangeo has a huge parking lot and a huge dining room, so if you're planning something, this is the spot to gather.

Arriving at 11am with 13 groups already waiting

I swear, it felt like all of Gwangju was spending the holiday here.. True to its reputation as a Gwangju favorite, the place was packed the moment I walked in. Since there was a wait, staff told one person from each group to get out and wait while the driver went to park first. (So thoughtful!) Despite the huge crowd, parking took barely any time — proof of just how big the lot is (parking for 80 cars). For reference, I arrived around 11am, a little before lunch rush, and there were already 13 groups waiting. But because the restaurant is so massive, it took less than 10 minutes(?) before I bought the eel and was seated upstairs to eat.

The system is: grab a waiting number on the first floor, pick out your eel yourself and pay, then head up to the second floor to eat. When you pay for the eel downstairs, they also assign you your table on the second floor.

Take the elevator up to the second floor and the dining tables spread out before you. The moment you step in, the high ceilings and open interior catch your eye — it's genuinely huge! The tables are spaced generously too, so you can chat comfortably without worrying about the table next to you. The charcoal grills are already set up, so you can start grilling eel the second you sit down, haha.

The self-serve bar was also really clean and well managed! Mountain leek greens, soy-marinated perilla leaves, pickled radish, and plenty of fresh vegetables were all fully stocked, so you could take as much as you wanted without feeling self-conscious — total bonus! There were also high chairs, so families with little ones can comfortably come here to eat out!

Deokeun Jangeo only uses 100% domestic freshwater eel, raised directly at their own farm in Muan, Jeollanam-do! Skipping the middleman distribution process is probably how they can offer such fresh eel at such a good price, haha. At ₩5,330 per 100g trimmed boneless, the value is genuinely insane!

You pick out your own pack of neatly trimmed eel from the refrigerated display case, and the pack I picked had such thick, plump, pale flesh that it looked mouth-watering before it even hit the grill.

Crisp outside, tender inside: eating the charcoal-grilled eel

The hot charcoal arrived, and they started laying the eel on the grate to grill! The savory smell as it turned golden brown was seriously incredible... T_T. The eel was so thick that even after cooking it kept its plump shape instead of curling up or thinning out — amazing.

I picked up a well-cooked piece and popped it in my mouth — wow, crispy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside, the perfect texture! Since it's raised antibiotic-free and healthy, there wasn't a hint of fishy smell or off-taste — just pure savory flavor bursting in my mouth!!

Piled with a generous helping of pungent shredded ginger over the sweet-savory house sauce, all the richness just disappears, and you keep going back for more, haha. Wrapped in mountain leek greens or pickled radish it's fresh and delicious too — even kids would fall for this and eat it right up!
