Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch: spotted while driving by, back two days later

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish place on Seobu-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. Last Saturday on the way back from brunch at Orange Bagel, I passed by and spotted this massive restaurant... Suwon's famous spot, Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda.

My sister already knew about it... we said let's go next time... and then boom, ran straight there from Monday. Hahahaha.

Daily 10:40–22:00 / Last order 20:50

A Suwon must-visit known for its wood-fired grilled fish.

Weekday lunch at 12:10 pm: waitlist number 5, seated in 5 minutes

Arrived around 12:10pm. Ugh... fully booked. No wonder the huge parking lot was packed with cars.

Spacious waiting room seating

The waiting room... is also enormous, haha. Clean and well set up — good to browse the menu while you wait and decide what to order.

CatchTable reservations were available, but we came without knowing that. Haha. So we got waitlist number 5. Still, it's weekday lunch, turnover is fast, and we got in after about 5 minutes.

What's on the self-serve banchan bar

The self-serve bar at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch has both basic and extra banchan (side dishes). Midway through the meal I noticed green mung bean jelly had appeared too. Too full to try the sungnyung (scorched rice tea) though — such a shame 😌.

The premium set for two, and how fast it arrives

We came for the myeongpum jeongsik (premium set)... there was a discount event running at the time.

Ordered: myeongpum jeongsik x2

Table set for the myeongpum jeongsik for two

Once we sat down, the side dishes started coming out one by one within 5 minutes. I thought it would take a while — with so many people and so many dishes on the menu, I worried it might take forever — but I was genuinely surprised how fast it came out.

Side dishes and main dishes arriving in sequence

Pork bulgogi in the premium set

Pork bulgogi... eating only fish can get boring, so having meat too is great. Good for fish lovers and meat lovers alike.

Pork bulgogi included in the myeongpum jeongsik

Mackerel sashimi and croaker sashimi

Mackerel sashimi and croaker sashimi. Mackerel sashimi I used to think you could only get in Jeju Island... now I don't even need to go to Jeju for fresh mackerel sashimi. Both the mackerel sashimi was delicious, and the croaker sashimi — my first time trying it — was chewy and good. The soy sauce with cheongyang chili and the house-made ssamjang (dipping sauce) were amazing 🤤👍. Now I'm curious about mackerel sushi too.

Two wood-fired fish: imyeonsu (Atka mackerel) and mackerel

Two types of grilled fish... imyeonsu (Atka mackerel) and mackerel... crispy outside, moist inside. Mild flavor, so it was great dipped in wasabi soy sauce. Never seen imyeonsu this big before. Thick and hearty... nutty and clean tasting. Delicious.

The 3-person myeongpum jeongsik comes with even more types of fish... if you come with more people, you get to enjoy an even wider variety of grilled fish 🤭. I'd love to try the braised cutlassfish too... if 4 people come and order the braised dish alongside the jeongsik, you could really enjoy a diverse spread.

Wood-fired grilled imyeonsu and mackerel

Wrapped the pork bulgogi in lettuce for a bite... there's no lettuce at the self-serve bar, but they'll bring it if you ask.

A bite of pork bulgogi wrapped in lettuce
A bite of mackerel sashimi wrapped in seaweed

Dipped the mackerel and croaker sashimi in seasoned soy sauce and wrapped it in seaweed for a bite each... open the table drawer and you'll find disposable fresh wasabi, tissues, wet wipes — all sorts of things you might need.

Is Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda good for family gatherings and company dinners?

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch has a massive parking lot, making it a fitting choice for group gatherings, company dinners, or family meals. You can also see live, swimming mackerel 🙂.

There was a sink near the entrance too... only noticed it on the way out. Ugh. There's also a microwave in the middle — could probably warm up baby food there. Haha.

  • Huge parking lot on site
  • Wide variety of side dishes and main dishes
  • Staff are busy but friendly, making for a pleasant meal
  • Menu and clean atmosphere suit group gatherings, company dinners, and family meals 🙂👍👍
