Suwon grilled fish near Gwonseon-gu Office, sikhye self-bar: Godeungeo
In short
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant on Seobu-ro near Gwonseon-gu Office in Suwon, Gyeonggi. On a weekday evening visit the grilled Spanish mackerel, grilled mackerel and grilled bakdae (tongue sole) all arrived with no fishy smell, and the self-serve bar held every side dish except the stir-fried pork, plus sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and sikhye (sweet rice punch). With no break time and a large parking lot and dining room, Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda works easily for family gatherings.

As a fellow seal who lives on meat, I barely grill fish at home — maybe once a year. I love grilled fish, but the smell just doesn't leave the house. My grilled-fish cooldown was finally over, so I went to a place near my neighborhood.
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch: hours and parking
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is open daily from 10:40 to 22:00, with last order at 20:50. In summer, it extends its hours and closes at 22:00.

The parking lot is genuinely huge — big enough to practice driving in, haha.

The dining room is really spacious too. There's a screen golf room on the second floor, so it's a great spot to grab a round and then come down to eat. With the size of the place and the variety of the menu, it also seemed well-suited to family gatherings or company dinners. (I actually visited on a weekday evening and most of the customers were families.)
You can make a reservation through Naver Reservation.

There's also a big waiting area inside, so it's no problem showing up in the heat of summer or the cold of winter.

The inside is really spacious, but it was packed with customers so I only got a few shots. They just told me to sit wherever was comfortable.

Right at the entrance, you can actually see the fresh mackerel on display.

The table comes fully set with wet wipes, tissues, soy sauce, and even wasabi.

What I ordered that day: grilled mackerel, grilled Spanish mackerel, and grilled bakdae.

Side dishes and the self-serve bar
The basic side dishes were radish namul, yeolmu kimchi (young radish greens kimchi), seaweed soup, stuffed cucumber kimchi, deodeok (bellflower root) muchim, geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi), mung bean jelly muchim, japchae, and jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork). The geotjeori, stuffed cucumber kimchi, japchae, and mung bean jelly muchim were especially good.

Every extra side dish is at the self-serve bar too (except the jeyuk bokkeum). It's not just a few of them — every single side dish that came out is there. There's even sungnyung and sikhye!!
How did the Spanish mackerel, mackerel and bakdae taste?

From left: grilled Spanish mackerel, grilled mackerel, grilled bakdae. Every single fish was fishy-smell-free and delicious. The bakdae was smaller so it came as two pieces. I love that kind of thoughtfulness 👍🏻

They really do grill it in a wood-fired oven. That's probably why there's no fishy smell and it tastes even better.

After finishing the meal, I had some sungnyung too. Not a lukewarm, sat-out kind — genuinely hot sungnyung.
I felt so stuffed I thought I might burst, so I finished it off with sikhye since it's basically a digestive.
Would I go back to Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda?
It's a grilled fish restaurant where the fish doesn't smell fishy, which I love; the self-serve bar has every side dish that came out, which I love; and there's no break time, which I love. 100% would revisit.
