Ansan seafood restaurant for fish roe stew: Eochongye 1beonji

In short

Eochongye 1beonji is a seafood restaurant on Bando Island in Ansan, Gyeonggi. We ordered the 26,000 won lunch-special fish roe stew with ramen noodles and 25,000 won half squid, half shrimp fritters. Verdict: a filling meal with generously loaded spicy broth and remarkably crisp, fresh fritters.

Getting to Eochongye 1beonji on Bando Island

Exterior of The Hound Bando Island building

It is in The Hound Bando Island building. Parking in the building is free; I took the elevator and came in through the back entrance. The fish in front of the restaurant are playing peekaboo!

A spacious, pleasant interior

The interior is bright and neat, and the chandelier really makes its presence known. It was such a pleasant place to eat. Toothpicks and a product to spray on your clothes were thoughtfully provided, too.

Ordering lunch-special fish roe stew and fritters

Ordered menu at Eochongye 1beonji

There were so many menu options that I was torn, then picked what my older sister—whom I was seeing for the first time in a while—chose!

There was cho-gochujang (sweet-tangy chili vinegar sauce) and bonito soy sauce on the table, while the drawer held spoons, napkins, and wet wipes.

A great restaurant where even the water tastes savory.

They served side dishes and miyeok-guk (seaweed soup). Oh wow—the salad was so good! Maybe it had breadcrumbs in it? It was pure nutty goodness.

Nutty salad and side dishes

There was crunchy, tangy seasoned seaweed and white kimchi. Then in came Mr. Fish Roe Stew.

While it bubbled away, the extra fritters arrived! My sister said the hygienic table material was something that set it apart from other places. I loved that it felt so clean.

The rice was tasty, and of course we added ramen noodles. As it bubbled away, my excitement bubbled up too, haha. How delicious will this be~

The roe, the roe—haha. I was touched that they gave us such a huge amount! It was packed with roe and full of nutty flavor. I was reminded of roe’s supposed benefits for high-protein energy recovery, brain and blood-vessel health, and skin health. And the enoki mushrooms were so tender.

Scoop up the roe, goni (fish milt), vegetables, and spicy broth together—how delicious is that! Goni is said to help with muscle building, stamina, vitamin intake, and digestion.

The broth had a lovely spicy kick too. My sister said it would be great for a hangover, haha.

How were the half-squid, half-shrimp fritters?

Wow! The half squid, half shrimp fritters came out, and I am so glad we ordered them. They paired beautifully with the stew, and the squid and shrimp were incredibly fresh!

The squid fritters were crisp outside and chewy inside! I usually love them but do not often get the chance to eat them; at Eochongye 1beonji, I had a truly impressive version. They really know how to fry—sending you the crunch through sound, haha.

My food-savvy sister said it was not the big, cheap giant squid, but genuinely delicious, fresh squid. Squid is also said to help with fatigue, cardiovascular health, liver function and hangover recovery, and brain health.

The shrimp fritters were on another level in size, too.

Large shrimp fritter

The shrimp meat was tender and moist, with a flavor that cannot be compared to store-bought shrimp fritters! Shrimp is said to support immunity and antioxidant activity, bone and gut health, and circulation.

Dip it in soy sauce and it is simply delicious.

Restroom

The restroom is in the building.

After trying it

I ate at Eochongye 1beonji Ansan with so much admiration because the food was delicious and made with fresh ingredients~ The staff were kind, and the restaurant was pleasant, making it a lovely place for a meal.
