Brisket doenjang rice swap at Choryang Saenggalbi, a Yeongdeungpo BBQ
In short
Choryang Saenggalbi is a fresh pork rib restaurant on Gukhoe-daero 34-gil, near Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station in Seoul. Over dinner with a friend who was due to give birth soon, we ordered SET A (fresh ribs, flower hanjeongsal, imperial cut) for 50,000 won and paid 10,000 won more to swap the kimchi stew for Hanwoo beef brisket doenjang rice, with scallop jeotgal (salted seafood) and cheese egg custard filling out the table. If you visit Choryang Saenggalbi, the brisket doenjang rice swap is the one order to make.

On a nice day, I made plans with a friend who's about to give birth soon, and figured meat was exactly what we needed to build up strength — so I searched hard and did my legwork. That's how I found Choryang Saenggalbi.
Let me get straight to the point: add ₩10,000 and switch to the beef brisket doenjang (soybean paste) rice bowl!! It's the real deal. Fresh, quality raw meat, that beef brisket doenjang rice, the bomb cheese egg custard, and even the house-made side dishes and jeotgal (salted seafood) — everything about this Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station BBQ spot was on point. My friend took one bite and gave the sincere eyebrow-furrow of approval, so here's my honest, vivid account of the visit.

Where is Choryang Saenggalbi? Hours and parking
Choryang Saenggalbi is on the 1st floor of 16-1 Gukhoe-daero 34-gil, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. Hours are Mon–Fri 15:00–23:00, Sat–Sun 15:00–22:30, and you can park at the Yeongdeungpo-gu Office parking lot (₩900 per 30 minutes).
What the restaurant looks like inside

When we arrived, we were greeted by a sign that felt clean yet had a distinctly cozy retro charm. Even though it's a BBQ place, the air inside was really fresh, not stuffy with smoke or grease smell, which put my pregnant friend at ease too.

The seats were round stainless steel tables, perfect for sitting close and chatting, and the storage-style chairs meant zero worry about your coat picking up smells. Staff grill the meat for you, and there's group seating too, so it'd be great for small gatherings or work dinners.

Review freebies and the corkage-free rules
There's a nice ongoing event where writing a Naver receipt review gets you a free soju, soft drink, or naengmyeon (cold noodles) for two — don't miss it! One bite of meat and you'll be craving a drink anyway.
Here's another handy tip: this place offers a corkage-free service. It's available with a minimum order of ₩25,000 per person, and if you use corkage, your table time is limited to 2 hours. Next time I want to come back with my friend and a bottle of wine..🥹
Choryang Saenggalbi set menus and the side dishes served
The biggest appeal of Choryang Saenggalbi is that they only serve truly fresh, never-frozen ribs. They say they strictly select only ribs 8 through 14 — the bones with the golden ratio of meat to fat — to serve genuinely fresh ribs. If you want to gnaw on chewy, savory fresh ribs off the bone, you have to come here.✨
- SET A: Fresh ribs (200g) + flower hanjeongsal (100g) + imperial cut (100g) + kimchi jjigae + cheese egg custard (₩50,000)
- SET B: Fresh ribs (200g) + flower hanjeongsal (100g) + seasoned ribs (200g) + kimchi jjigae + cheese egg custard (₩55,000)
- ⭐️⭐️ Add ₩10,000 to a set order to swap the stew for beef brisket doenjang rice for two.

The basic side dishes that arrived right after ordering were so tidy and generous you could say 'there wasn't a single bad side dish.' We got spicy-tangy scallion salad that cuts through the meat's fattiness, fresh lettuce wraps, crunchy refreshing pickled radish, and well-fermented spicy kimchi with green onion.
Alongside those came coarse salt, raw garlic, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and this place's unrivaled kick point — scallop jeotgal (salted seafood). Chewy in texture with concentrated spicy-savory flavor, it built up my expectations before even trying it with the meat.
How SET A tastes: fresh ribs, flower hanjeongsal, imperial cut

We went with SET A to properly enjoy the clean, savory flavor of fresh raw meat. The moment the meat plate arrived, I let out an audible cheer at the marbling.

Once the meat hit the heated cast-iron grill plate, a lively sizzle and savory aroma hit our noses. Thanks to the steady but strong heat unique to cast iron, the outside turned golden and crisp while the juices stayed locked inside.

Once cooked, the meat was neatly arranged on a dedicated rack so it stayed warm without burning.
- Fresh ribs: No off flavors at all — the more you chew, the more rich, savory juice bursts out. Even just dipped in salt, you can taste the meat's natural flavor.
- Flower hanjeongsal: Crispy outside, chewy inside — the texture is fantastic and fun to chew.
- Imperial cut: No fat, but the lean, chewy, tender texture is addictive — I kept reaching for more..

I especially recommend wrapping a freshly grilled piece of meat with a generous heap of salty, chewy scallop jeotgal in lettuce ㅠㅠ

The cheese egg custard in an earthenware pot that came with the set was also visually overwhelming. It's snugly blanketed in melted cheese — how could that not be delicious..
The 10,000-won Hanwoo brisket doenjang rice swap: don't skip it

We added ₩10,000 to swap the set's basic stew for the signature Hanwoo (Korean beef) brisket doenjang rice, and this is something you absolutely must try if you visit. It's served in its own pot set right on the burner — rice, tofu, enoki mushrooms, and cheongyang chili piled underneath a full blanket of beef brisket covering the pot.
As it simmered, the rich savoriness of the beef brisket and the hearty, slightly spicy doenjang broth soaked deep into the rice, growing thicker and thicker. A big spoonful cut right through the greasiness from all the meat we'd eaten and filled us up with something warm and hearty. The two of us blew on it and ate happily, saying it really hit the spot.
Final verdict on Choryang Saenggalbi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a life-changing BBQ restaurant where the meat quality, friendly service, and comfortable atmosphere all lined up perfectly. The base meat quality was already excellent, but the heat of the cast-iron grill, the tidy side dishes, the game-changing scallop jeotgal, and the filling beef brisket doenjang rice — nothing was lacking.
Before the wait gets long, I strongly recommend you visit soon and fall for the charm of the delicious fresh ribs and beef brisket doenjang rice!! We're planning to come back with wine next time.🍷🍾
