Dongnam-gu, Cheonan crab restaurant: soy shrimp, pot rice, Huni Gejang

Today I visited Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch (훈이꽃게장 천안본점), famous in Cheonan for its marinated crab! I already love soy sauce crab (ganjang gejang), so I went with high expectations, and the meal was even better than I expected 🙂

Where is Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch, and what about parking?

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is at 52-6 Taejosan-gil, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, Chungnam. There's a parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so parking was easy, which was great!

The inside of Huni Gejang is wide open, so it feels airy and nice :) These days a big restaurant feels good rather than stuffy, I think!

Huni Gejang menu: how much is the signature crab set for 2?

The menu centers on marinated crab, with a variety of set meals on offer!

We ordered the signature crab set for 2 (대표꽃게장정식) at ₩50,000 without any hesitation: 1 soy crab, 0.5 spicy crab, 1 soy shrimp and pot rice! If you want to really enjoy the crab, the signature set seemed the safest and most satisfying choice!

You can also order side dish refills by type on a tablet, which was really convenient :)

Huni Gejang side dishes and steamed egg

After you order, the basic side dishes (banchan) are set out first, and I was surprised by how many kinds there were!

It's a crab specialist, so I assumed only the crab would be good, but every side dish came out neat and tidy, which I liked. Lots of them go well with rice, so my chopsticks kept reaching for more the whole meal :) The steamed egg that came with it was fluffy, and one bite was pure softness! The seasoning on the sides wasn't too strong either, just right, so it didn't overpower the taste of the crab.

Signature crab set for 2: how was the soy crab?

The signature crab set I'd been waiting for finally arrived! It looked really appetizing from the first glance 🐷 The crabs were plumper than I expected, and the amount felt plenty for two.

I tried the soy crab first, and it wasn't just salty; the savory depth was really good! The crab meat was soft and moist, almost melting in my mouth, and I barely noticed any fishy smell, which I was happy about 😆

The best moment was mixing rice into the crab shell, haha! Add a spoonful of rice, stir it with the crab sauce, and I understood why everyone calls marinated crab a "rice thief" (밥도둑)! The crab meat was plump and packed full, so it was fun to eat.

Is the spicy crab hot and harsh?

The spicy crab (yangnyeom gejang) at Huni Gejang wasn't overly intense either; it had a nicely balanced savory flavor that kept me going back. If you like marinated crab, I think you'll be satisfied 🦀🦀🦀 Above all it went so well with rice that I enjoyed it the whole meal 🙂 We both ate so hard that we barely talked, haha. I think it's a good choice for crab lovers and also for taking your parents!
